Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus platiceps was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1990, within the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest loach family and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been split into narrower ones like Schistura, Barbatula and Traissochilus. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority on valid fish names, currently keeps this species in Nemacheilus.
As with many Nemacheilidae, published biological detail is sparse: most of what is documented concerns size, distribution and basic water chemistry, gathered from museum specimens and a handful of field surveys rather than sustained study of a single population. That sparseness is typical of the family rather than a sign that anything is wrong with the species itself.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate loach reaching only about 2.5 in in standard length, with the low, streamlined, faintly flattened profile typical of stream-dwelling Nemacheilidae — a body shape built for holding position against current rather than for open-water swimming. Like its relatives it is a true loach: essentially scaleless to the touch, with barbels around the mouth for feeling out food on the bottom, and no true dorsal spine.
Detailed morphological description beyond size and general body form is not well documented for this species in accessible literature, and specific colour pattern is not reliably recorded in the sources available — a fair reflection of how little targeted study a fish this size and this narrowly distributed tends to receive.
Habitat
Nemacheilus platiceps is native to the Mekong river basin, recorded from Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, with an additional population in the separate Dong Nai system of southern Vietnam. It lives in upland rivers and streams, favouring clear, shallow water — both slow-moving pools with decaying leaf litter and terrestrial vegetation, and stretches of moderate to fairly fast current running over gravel.
Water in these streams runs warm rather than cold, roughly 72–79 °F, with a pH around neutral to slightly acidic (6.0–7.5) and soft to moderately hard mineral content. High dissolved oxygen is a constant feature of the habitat, delivered by the current itself rather than by depth or shade, and any aquarium setup should reproduce that flow and oxygenation rather than the still, warm blackwater sometimes assumed for Southeast Asian fish.
Feeding
In the wild this species behaves as a bottom-foraging micro-predator, primarily taking small insects, worms and crustaceans picked off gravel and leaf litter, with some incidental plant and detrital matter making it broadly omnivorous in practice. Reported trophic level places it toward the lower end of the predator scale, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates rather than larger prey.
In the aquarium it accepts a comparable range: sinking pellets and dried foods, plus live and frozen offerings such as daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia) and bloodworm. As with most bottom-feeding loaches, food needs to reach the substrate — a fish this reclusive and this size will not compete well for food left floating at the surface.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Nemacheilus platiceps in the literature consulted, and no reliable external sexual dimorphism has been recorded either. This gap is consistent with the species as a whole: it is a small, reclusive stream fish that has not been the subject of dedicated breeding studies, in the wild or in captivity.
What can be said follows the pattern for Nemacheilidae generally — egg-scattering tied to the current rather than to any nest, cave or pairing ritual. Beyond that general expectation, the specifics for this species are simply not known, and it would be misleading to invent detail that has not been observed.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, Nemacheilus platiceps is not known to have been bred in home aquaria. The expected mode, based on the family, is an egg-scatterer: ripe fish release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. No hobbyist accounts of successful captive spawning were found for this species.
This is an honest gap rather than an oversight — most Nemacheilidae are small, unglamorous stream fish that arrive in the trade as wild-caught imports, and there has been little commercial or hobbyist incentive to work out their reproduction in tanks the way there has for higher-profile aquarium fish.
In the aquarium
Kept well, this is a peaceful, group-living fish: a shoal of four or more settles better than singles or pairs, which tend to stay reclusive and hidden. A tank should replicate its stream habitat rather than a still, planted community setup — decent current, strong oxygenation, and a substrate of fine sand for burrowing combined with smooth pebbles, bogwood and slate for shelter. Water in the 72–79 °F range with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.5) and soft-to-medium hardness matches its native streams.
As a near-scaleless loach it shares the family's general sensitivity to copper-based and full-strength medications, so any treatment should start conservatively. Its small adult size (around 2.5 in) means it does not need a large tank on size grounds alone, but it does need the flow and oxygen a static aquarium often lacks — an undersized filter or a tank with no real current is the most common way this species is kept poorly.
Conservation
Nemacheilus platiceps is listed by the IUCN as Data Deficient, assessed in 2011. That status reflects a genuine gap in population data across its Mekong basin range — Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, plus the separate Dong Nai system — rather than any evidence of decline. Its range spans a river system under considerable pressure from damming, sediment change and fishing intensity, but no species-specific assessment of trend or threat has been published.
Given the Data Deficient status, this is a case for restraint rather than alarm: there is no basis in the available literature for claiming either that the species is currently threatened or that it is secure, and the honest position is to say so plainly.
