Sinogastromyzon multiocellum is a small hillstream loach of the family Balitoridae, described by Nguyen in 2005 and known only from mountain stream systems in Vietnam. Like all members of its genus, it is built for life in fast, cold, clear, oxygen-rich torrents: its pectoral and pelvic fins spread wide and work in concert with the body musculature to form an adhesive suction apparatus that locks the fish to smooth rock in currents strong enough to repel most other fish. It rasps biofilm, diatoms and aufwuchs from bare stone and is an obligate rheophile — an animal whose physiology and foraging strategy are inseparable from fast water and high dissolved oxygen. In an aquarium that is warm, still or biologically young, it starves and suffocates; the gap between what is sold and what is needed is wide, which makes it a fish strictly for the specialist.

Taxonomy & naming

Sinogastromyzon multiocellum was described by Nguyen in 2005. It belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream loaches or river loaches — a group of flattened, rheophilic cypriniform fishes distributed across fast-flowing streams of South and East Asia. The genus Sinogastromyzon (literally 'Chinese belly sucker') encompasses a cluster of dorsoventrally flattened species adapted to torrential mountain streams in southern China, Indochina and surrounding highland drainages.

The genus was established to capture a radiation of closely related torrent loaches sharing the characteristic sucker-disc body plan, and it currently includes around twenty described species, of which S. multiocellum is among the more data-sparse. The species epithet multiocellum means 'many little eyes' or 'many ocelli' in Latin, almost certainly referring to the spotted or ocellate colour pattern on the body. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) is the authority for the valid combination; no synonyms are currently recorded for this species in the literature available.

Morphology

The body is strongly flattened top-to-bottom — depressed — with a broad, flattened head and a ventrally positioned mouth equipped with fleshy, papillose lips adapted for rasping biofilm from rock. The pectoral fins are enlarged and horizontally spread, their lower surface flush with the belly; the pelvic fins similarly fan out; together with specialised musculature and a reduced or absent swimbladder, this arrangement creates a functioning suction platform that anchors the fish to substrate in powerful currents. This is convergent in several independent hillstream lineages but is particularly refined in Sinogastromyzon.

The species epithet alludes to a spotted pattern of multiple ocelli or eye-like markings on the dorsal surface — a pattern that serves as camouflage against the mottled substrate of sunlit stream beds. Exact adult size is poorly documented for this species specifically; congeners typically range from around 1.5–3 in standard length. The skin carries minute, deeply embedded scales and is effectively near-naked to the touch, which makes the fish sensitive to abrasion and to copper-based medications.

Habitat

Sinogastromyzon multiocellum is endemic to Vietnam, from mountain stream drainages in the northern or central highlands. It inhabits fast-flowing, highly oxygenated, clear streams with rocky or stony substrate — the archetypal hillstream torrent environment. The water in such systems is typically cool, well-oxygenated, low in nutrients and low in dissolved organic load; conductivity tends to be low and pH close to neutral or slightly acidic.

This is a rheophilic specialist in every meaningful sense: it clings to exposed rock in the zone of maximum current, where oxygen saturation approaches 100% and organic deposition is minimal. It does not inhabit ponds, slow side-channels or lowland rivers. Temperature in its native highland streams is substantially cooler than in the lowland rivers associated with most ornamental fish, and it is not a warm tropical species. Water movement and dissolved oxygen are non-negotiable requirements.

Feeding

Sinogastromyzon multiocellum is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps the living film of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, microorganisms and fine particulate detritus (collectively 'biofilm') from rock surfaces with its specialised papillose lips. In nature this biofilm develops on sunlit boulders and bedrock where current keeps the surface clean of silt, and it represents a dense, nutritionally varied food source unavailable in bare tanks or newly established aquaria.

In the aquarium, providing adequate nutrition is the central challenge. The tank must be mature — well-established with months of algal and biofilm growth on all hard surfaces before the fish is introduced. Supplementary feeding with small frozen invertebrates (Daphnia, nauplii, bloodworm in careful amounts) and blanched greens (spinach, courgette, cucumber) supports the diet, but no frozen food substitutes for biofilm on the long term. A fish kept in a bare, clean tank — or in any tank where the algal surface is constantly scraped away — will slowly waste and die, which is the single most common cause of death in this and related hillstream genera.

Mating

Very little is recorded specifically about the mating behaviour of Sinogastromyzon multiocellum. In the wider genus and in other Balitoridae hillstream loaches, males and females are generally similar in external appearance, though in mature fish females may be noticeably plumper across the abdomen when in spawning condition, offering a subtle sex distinction at best. There is no reliable account of the territorial or courtship behaviours of this species in the available literature.

In related hillstream loaches, breeding readiness is typically tied to the seasonal cycle of highland streams — water temperature, flow rate and photoperiod shifting with altitude and season. A small number of hillstream loach species (notably Sewellia lineolata in the hobby) have been induced to spawn in mature, strongly-flowing aquaria when conditions closely mimic the natural seasonal cues, but records of successful in-tank spawning of Sinogastromyzon species are absent or vanishingly rare.

Breeding

Sinogastromyzon multiocellum has not been bred in home aquaria in any documented record. Hillstream loaches of the family Balitoridae are egg-scatterers with no parental care: ripe fish release eggs among stones, gravel or into rock crevices in fast-flowing water, and the adhesive eggs develop without any adult involvement. Some hillstream species in well-established, powerfully-filtered river-style aquaria have been observed to spawn — Sewellia lineolata being the best-known example — and a mature, biologically rich hillstream setup with appropriate seasonal temperature fluctuation gives the best chance of triggering reproductive behaviour in any of these loaches.

For this species specifically, the honest position is that breeding data are absent. It should not be purchased with any expectation of captive reproduction. The fish seen in the trade are wild-collected from their native Vietnamese highland streams, not captive-produced; no large-scale farm production of this species is known. This wild-collection dependency makes sound husbandry — keeping the fish alive and well — a genuine conservation responsibility for any keeper who acquires one.

In the aquarium

Sinogastromyzon multiocellum is a specialist fish for a specialist setup, and it will not thrive in a standard community aquarium. The minimum requirement is a dedicated hillstream river tank: a long, shallow aquarium (ideally 31.5 in or more in length) equipped with a powerful powerhead or wavemaker to generate continuous, strong current along one face; a bed of smooth river pebbles and large flat stones that will accumulate biofilm over time; and bright lighting to encourage algal and diatom growth on every hard surface. The tank must be established and running for several months before any hillstream loach is introduced, so that the essential biofilm coat is in place.

Temperature should follow the species' highland origins — cooler than a standard tropical tank, ideally in the range appropriate to Vietnamese mountain streams. Warm, stagnant, oxygen-poor water will suffocate the fish even before starvation becomes the issue. Dissolved oxygen must remain high; surface agitation and strong circulation are not optional. Because the skin is near-scaleless, copper-based medications and many antiparasitic treatments must be used with extreme caution and at reduced doses if they are used at all. Sinogastromyzon species are not aggressive and can be kept with other hillstream loaches of similar size and requirements, though the tank must be mature and well-stocked with biofilm before adding any members of the group.

Conservation

Sinogastromyzon multiocellum has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is recorded here as Data Deficient based on the pattern seen across the genus, of which the majority of assessed species (around ten of fourteen evaluated) carry the DD designation. The species is known from a restricted range within Vietnamese highland stream systems, and its specialised habitat requirements — clear, fast, cold, unpolluted mountain streams — make it inherently vulnerable to the pressures that affect such systems: watershed deforestation, agricultural runoff, siltation and the extraction of stream water for irrigation or domestic use.

Because all specimens in the aquarium trade are wild-collected, any keeper who acquires this species is directly linked to the wild population. The combination of a geographically restricted range, data-poor conservation status, obligate habitat specificity and ongoing pressure on highland freshwater systems in Vietnam and Indochina makes this a fish that warrants careful sourcing. Purchasing only from responsible traders who can document legal, sustainable collection is the minimum due diligence a keeper can apply.
