Sinogastromyzon nanpanjiangensis is a hillstream loach of the family Balitoridae, described by Li in 1987 from the Nanpanjiang River system in Lunan County, Yunnan Province, southern China. Like all members of its genus it is a highly specialised torrent fish — the body is dorsoventrally flattened into a sucker-like form that pins it to exposed rock in fast, cold, oxygen-rich current, and it grazes the thin biofilm of algae and diatoms that coats those surfaces. It belongs to a genus of eastern Asian hillstream loaches whose individual species are often confined to a single river system, making them acutely vulnerable to any degradation of that water. In the aquarium it demands the same conditions that sculpted it: cool, powerfully flowing, pristine water and a mature rockscape thick with established biofilm — without that, it slowly starves.

Taxonomy & naming

Sinogastromyzon nanpanjiangensis was described by Li in 1987, with the type locality recorded as the Nanpanjiang River at Lunan County, Yunnan Province, China. The species has remained in the genus Sinogastromyzon since its description, and a peer-reviewed taxonomic study of Sinogastromyzon species from Yunnan confirms it as a valid species under that combination.

The genus Sinogastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream and torrent loaches of Asia — and is endemic to eastern Asia, with members distributed across rivers of southern China, including Yunnan, Guangxi and adjacent drainages. The genus is characterised by the strongly flattened ventral surface that functions as a frictional adhesive disc, enabling the fish to hold position on rock in fast current. No taxonomic synonyms or reclassifications are currently recorded for this species.

Morphology

Like its congeners, Sinogastromyzon nanpanjiangensis is an obligate rheophile built for life in fast, rocky torrents. The body is broad and flat when viewed from below, with the head, pectoral and pelvic fins all positioned ventrally and splayed outward to maximise the contact area against the substrate. Seen from above the fish looks almost leaf-like; the dorsal surface is low and streamlined. The flattened belly acts as a sucker through the combined effect of the pectoral and pelvic fins pressing against the rock, not a true anatomical sucker disc, but the functional result is the same: the fish clings tenaciously to smooth stone in current that would tumble most fish away.

The mouth is inferior and adapted to rasping, with fleshy lips bearing fine papillae that scrape algae and diatom film off rock. Detailed published measurements for this species are sparse, but congeners in the genus typically reach 1.5–3 in in total length. The skin is near-scaleless, as in other balitorids, which makes the fish sensitive to copper-based and full-dose chemical treatments.

Habitat

The type locality is the Nanpanjiang River in Lunan County, Yunnan Province, southern China. The Nanpanjiang is a major tributary of the Pearl River system, flowing through upland karst terrain at elevation. In habitats like this, hillstream loaches of the genus Sinogastromyzon occupy the fastest, most oxygenated reaches: shallow riffles and rapids over smooth bedrock and cobble, where the water is cool, crystal-clear and highly oxygenated by constant turbulence.

Water conditions in the Nanpanjiang headwaters are distinctly cool, not tropical. Congeners in related genera from comparable Yunnan and Guangxi hill streams thrive at 61–75 °F (61–75 °F); the assumption of warm tropical conditions is inappropriate for this species. The current is strong — equivalent to a tank turnover of 10–15 times per hour — and the substrate is bare rock or cobble covered in a biofilm of algae, diatoms and periphyton. Dissolved oxygen is high, turbidity is low, and the water is typically soft to moderately hard and near-neutral in pH.

Feeding

Sinogastromyzon nanpanjiangensis is an aufwuchs grazer: it scrapes biofilm, algae and diatoms from the surface of rocks in flowing water, occasionally taking small invertebrates that live within that film. This feeding strategy is intimately tied to its morphology — the inferior mouth and papillate lips are instruments for rasping, not for picking up sinking pellets from an open substrate.

In the aquarium this feeding mode creates the single most common cause of death in the species and its allies: starvation in a tank that has not had time to grow a proper coating of algae and diatoms. A newly set-up tank with clean glass and bare rock carries almost no food for a hillstream loach, however good the filtration. The tank must be mature, with established green and brown algae coating every hard surface, before a fish of this kind is introduced. Supplement with blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) and small frozen foods such as daphnia or cyclops to round out the diet; do not rely on a hill loach to be a generic algae-eater that will also eat flake.

Mating

No detailed observations of mating behaviour in Sinogastromyzon nanpanjiangensis have been published, and the species is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade. Inference from its congeners and from better-studied hillstream loaches in the family Balitoridae suggests that males and females differ minimally in external appearance, though ripe females may be visibly broader through the body when in condition.

In the wild, spawning in hillstream balitorids appears to be tied to seasonal cues — changes in water temperature, flow velocity and day length associated with the transition into and out of the dry season in upland southern China. Recreating those cues in captivity requires equipment and expertise beyond ordinary hobby conditions. The species is not known to have been spawned in home aquaria.

Breeding

Sinogastromyzon nanpanjiangensis is not bred in home aquaria. Hillstream loaches in Balitoridae are egg-scatterers with no parental care: where spawning behaviour has been observed (most clearly in the closely related Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam), eggs are deposited among stones and gravel in the current and left; neither parent guards or tends them. A mature, strongly-flowing river tank with a stable biofilm-covered rockscape is the prerequisite, and even then successful spawnings of most genera are rare.

For S. nanpanjiangensis specifically, the combination of its very restricted distribution, limited presence in the hobby, and the general rarity of Sinogastromyzon in the aquarium trade means there is no record of captive spawning. Hobbyists keeping this species should do so without expectation of reproduction. Any fish in the trade are almost certainly wild-collected from the Nanpanjiang system.

In the aquarium

Sinogastromyzon nanpanjiangensis is a specialist's fish, not a beginner's purchase. The non-negotiable requirements are: cool water (61–75 °F / 61–75 °F), very high flow (10–15 × tank volume per hour, delivered by a powerhead positioned to sweep the rock surfaces), high dissolved oxygen, near-zero ammonia and nitrite, and a well-matured rockscape with a thick coating of algae and diatom film. The tank must be running and growing that film for weeks or months before the fish arrives; introducing it into a new setup is a slow death sentence. A tank of at least 15–20 US gal with a large footprint and a flat, smooth rock arrangement works better than a tall narrow aquarium.

Being near-scaleless, Sinogastromyzon nanpanjiangensis is sensitive to copper-based medications and should be treated at half-dose or less with carefully chosen products. It is also prone to the effects of poor water quality far faster than a scaled fish — the high-oxygen, low-nutrient water of its native torrent leaves it little tolerance for stagnant or polluted conditions. Warm, still aquarium water — the default state of most community tanks — is not suitable: temperatures above 75–77 °F compromise oxygen uptake and stress the fish chronically. Keep it with other hillstream species of comparable size and flow requirement, or alone; it is not compatible with warm-water community setups.

Conservation

The IUCN status of Sinogastromyzon nanpanjiangensis is reported as Endangered (EN), though direct verification of a specific Red List assessment for this species was not possible from available sources. The assessment is biologically plausible: the species is a range-restricted endemic of a single river system in Yunnan, and many such hillstream loaches in southern China face severe pressure from water extraction, sand and gravel dredging, pollution from agricultural runoff and karst-area mining, and alteration of the stream gradient by small hydroelectric weirs — all of which destroy the fast, clear-water riffle habitat these fish require.

The Nanpanjiang River basin in Yunnan supports a high diversity of endemic freshwater fishes, many of which are similarly threatened. A species confined to the cool headwater riffles of a single drainage has no refuge if that drainage is degraded. Any aquarium trade in this species would involve wild-collected fish, and collectors should be aware that export of threatened Chinese freshwater fishes is regulated. The species is rarely encountered in the trade, which in this case is probably a function of its obscurity and restricted range rather than any protective measure.
