Taxonomy & naming
Sundoreonectes obesus was described by the French ichthyologist Léon Vaillant in 1902. For most of the twentieth century it would have been filed under one of the old catch-all genera used for Southeast Asian stone loaches, but in 1990 Maurice Kottelat erected the genus Sundoreonectes specifically to hold the northeastern Bornean stone loaches, and obesus became its type species alongside its only congener, S. sabanus.
The genus name combines "Sunda" — the Sundaland biogeographic region encompassing Borneo, Sumatra, Java and the Malay Peninsula — with a reference to Oreonectes, another stone-loach genus name built from the Greek oros (mountain) and nektes (swimmer). Sundoreonectes is therefore best read as "the Sundaic mountain-swimmer," a fitting label for a fast-water endemic. The family Nemacheilidae to which it belongs is the largest of the loach families and has been heavily reshuffled by molecular work in recent decades, with many of its Eurasian genera — Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others — only recently resolved into their current combinations; Sundoreonectes itself has been stable since Kottelat's 1990 description.
Morphology
Like most Nemacheilidae, Sundoreonectes obesus is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach built for holding position on a stream bed in current rather than for open swimming. FishBase records a maximum length of about 4 in total length, placing it among the more modestly sized stone loaches. As a nemacheilid it can be expected to carry the family's characteristic near-scaleless or very finely scaled skin and a small suborbital spine, though no species-specific description of colour pattern, fin structure or the spine's exact form was found in the sources reviewed here — the published record for this species is limited to FishBase's bare summary line.
That gap is common for narrow-range Bornean stream endemics: many nemacheilid species are known from only the original type series or a handful of subsequent collections, and detailed morphological accounts never make it past the original species description. Rather than guess at colouration or fin counts, this profile notes plainly that fine-grained morphological detail for S. obesus is data-sparse.
Habitat
Sundoreonectes obesus is endemic to Borneo, in Southeast Asia, and — going by its placement in Sundoreonectes and the general ecology of the genus — inhabits fast-flowing, clear freshwater streams rather than still or sluggish water. FishBase classifies it as a demersal, tropical freshwater species, consistent with a bottom-hugging stream loach rather than a lake or floodplain fish.
No published water-chemistry profile (temperature range, pH, hardness) was found for this species specifically. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a group are stream-bed specialists that depend on cool-to-warm, clear, well-oxygenated, moving water over gravel, sand and stone, and there is no reason from the available record to expect S. obesus to differ from that pattern. Given its tropical Bornean origin the water is likely to run on the warmer side of the stone-loach spectrum rather than cold — but this should be read as a reasonable inference from the family and region, not a confirmed data point.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Sundoreonectes obesus was found in the sources reviewed. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are bold benthic micro-predators, working the stream bottom for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — picked from among gravel and stones in fast water, and S. obesus can reasonably be expected to feed the same way in the wild.

There is no record of Sundoreonectes obesus being bred in captivity. Following the pattern for stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) generally, any reproduction would be expected to take the form of egg-scattering over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry — the same basic mode documented for better-studied relatives in the family.
This species is essentially unknown to the aquarium hobby, and data on it — including anything relating to breeding — is sparse to the point of being effectively absent beyond the taxonomic and distributional facts on FishBase. Breeding mode here should be read as an inference from family-level biology, not a confirmed observation for this species.

Sundoreonectes obesus does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade, and no dedicated care account for the species was found among the sources reviewed. What can be said comes from the general template for stone loaches (Nemacheilidae): these are bottom-dwelling, often nocturnally active fish that need strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen and clean water, a substrate of gravel with stones, rockwork or driftwood for cover, and are typically kept in small groups of three to six rather than singly.
As a near-scaleless loach in the broader Cobitoidea, it should be assumed sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, warranting the same caution — half-doses, gentle products, close observation — applied across the group. Given the complete absence of species-specific husbandry data, anyone encountering this fish in the trade should treat it as an experimental, poorly documented species rather than rely on generic loach-keeping assumptions alone.
Conservation
Sundoreonectes obesus is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment recorded via FishBase from July 2019; FishBase separately notes low vulnerability to fishing pressure and a medium estimated population resilience (doubling time of roughly 1.4 to 4.4 years). No detailed threats assessment or population trend was found in the sources reviewed.
As a narrow-range Bornean stream endemic, the species sits within a region — Borneo — under significant and ongoing pressure from deforestation, land conversion and river alteration, the same broad pressures affecting much of Sundaland's freshwater fauna.
