Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa aquaecaeruleae was described by the Russian ichthyologist A. M. Prokofiev in 2001. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest loach family and one that has absorbed much of the old, unwieldy genus Nemacheilus (also written Noemacheilus) as taxonomists split it apart over recent decades. Triplophysa itself is the dominant genus of loach across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Central Asia, with a great many species described from isolated highland drainages, several of them, like this one, known only from a small number of records.
The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination, and it remains Triplophysa aquaecaeruleae; no synonymy or generic reassignment is noted in the sources consulted here. Given how actively Cobitoidea taxonomy is still being revised, it would not be surprising if future work refines the species limits within this part of the genus, but nothing in the available record calls the current name into question.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa aquaecaeruleae shares the family's general build: a small, elongate, cylindrical body, a flattened head and underslung mouth suited to feeding off the streambed, and barbels around the mouth for detecting food by touch and taste in fast water. Like many of its relatives it is essentially scaleless or covered only in minute, deeply embedded scales, leaving the skin exposed — a point that matters for husbandry more than it matters for identification.
No size, colour-pattern or meristic data are given in the sources available for this species, and none should be assumed. This is a genuinely data-sparse fish: it is best described honestly as a small stone loach in the Triplophysa mould rather than assigned specific measurements that are not on record.
Habitat
The species is endemic to China, recorded from the Batang River mouth near Yushu in Qinghai Province and more broadly from the Jinsha River basin — the uppermost reach of the Yangtze as it drains the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This is high-altitude country, and the Triplophysa species that live there are characteristically found in cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, nutrient-poor mountain streams rather than warm lowland rivers.
No direct temperature or water-chemistry measurements for this species are recorded in the sources reviewed, but the setting is unambiguous: this is a coldwater plateau-stream fish, not a warm tropical one, and any inference about its ecology should start from that high-altitude, fast-flowing context.
Feeding
