Triplophysa gerzeensis is a small stone loach known only from the high Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of Xizang (Tibet), China, named for Gertse (Gerze) County near its type locality. It belongs to the Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that fills the cold, clear, fast-flowing streams of Asia's mountains with small, near-scaleless bottom-feeders. Like most of its relatives it is a genuinely obscure fish: it has never been formally assessed by the IUCN, its adult size and precise habits have not been documented in the literature available to us, and almost nothing has been written about it outside taxonomic and checklist sources. That obscurity is itself the honest story — most Triplophysa on the Tibetan Plateau live and die without ever meeting an aquarist.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa gerzeensis was described by Cao and Zhu in 1988. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae (the stone or brook loaches, order Cypriniformes), which the Catalog of Fishes recognises as valid; older regional literature sometimes still groups these fish loosely under the historical name Nemachilus, a catch-all genus that has since been split many times over as the Tibetan and Central Asian loach fauna was revised. Triplophysa itself is one of the results of that splitting, and it is now by far the largest genus of high-altitude Asian stone loaches, with well over a hundred described species.

The species epithet gerzeensis references Gertse (also transliterated Gerze) County in Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region, China, close to where the type material was collected. As with many Triplophysa described from single river systems on the plateau, its taxonomic placement is secure but its biology is not: it appears in taxonomic databases (ITIS, Wikidata) and in FishBase's checklist of Xizang endemics, but it has not been picked up by the aquarium hobby literature or by conservation assessment bodies.

Morphology

As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa gerzeensis is built like its relatives: an elongated, cylindrical, benthic body suited to holding position on stone and gravel in fast water, a flattened head and underslung mouth for grazing and picking at the substrate, and small barbels around the mouth for sensing food. Nemacheilids are largely scaleless or carry only minute, deeply embedded scales, leaving the skin exposed — a trait shared across the family and one with direct consequences for how the fish should be handled and medicated in captivity.

Exact size, coloration and fin-ray counts for this species are not documented in the sources available to us, and we prefer to say so rather than guess. Related high-altitude Triplophysa such as T. stolickai and T. siluroides typically run from about 4–6 in; T. gerzeensis, known from a single Tibetan stream system, has not had its size independently confirmed and may well be smaller.

Habitat

Triplophysa gerzeensis is endemic to the Gertse County area of Xizang (Tibet), China, on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau — one of the coldest and highest freshwater environments in the world. Nemacheilids as a family are cold-water, lotic specialists: they live in clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated mountain streams over stone, gravel and boulder substrates, and essentially never occupy still or stagnant water.

Given its plateau setting, this species almost certainly experiences a genuinely cold, alpine stream regime rather than the warm, tropical conditions typical of Southeast Asian loaches. We do not have a confirmed water-temperature range from the source record, but the broader habitat data for Tibetan Triplophysa points to cool-to-cold, swift, highly oxygenated water, likely in the range of roughly 50–61 °F or lower depending on season and elevation; some alpine and subterranean-adjacent Triplophysa tolerate even colder conditions. This is not a warm-water aquarium fish by default, and any care attempt should assume cool, high-flow conditions rather than a standard tropical setup.

Feeding

Nemacheilid stone loaches are bottom-dwelling micro-predators, working over stone and gravel for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey drifting or clinging in fast water. Triplophysa gerzeensis almost certainly follows this pattern, though no species-specific dietary study has been located for it.

In a hypothetical aquarium setting, fish of this genus and habitat type generally do best on small live or frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small crustaceans — that mimic natural invertebrate prey, offered along the substrate rather than at the surface; sinking foods matter more than flake, which stone loaches often ignore.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Triplophysa gerzeensis in the sources available to us. Stone and brook loaches of this genus are not known for elaborate courtship; where breeding has been observed at all in Nemacheilidae, it typically involves fish scattering eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water rather than any pair-bonding, cave-guarding, or mouthbrooding behaviour — patterns that belong to entirely different fish groups, not to loaches. There is no dimorphism information available for this species; sexes have not been reliably distinguished in what little literature exists.

Breeding

As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa gerzeensis has essentially no breeding record, wild or captive. The expected pattern for this genus is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward, but this has not been specifically confirmed for T. gerzeensis. Given that the species is known only from a remote, high-altitude Tibetan stream system and has never entered the aquarium trade in any documented way, it should be assumed unbred in captivity, and any statement about its reproductive biology beyond the general Nemacheilidae pattern would be guesswork we are not willing to offer.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa gerzeensis has no known aquarium history; it is not a trade species, and there is no evidence it has ever been kept or bred by hobbyists. This entry exists to document a genuinely obscure, data-sparse endemic rather than to recommend it as a pet.

If it were ever encountered — which would most likely be as an unintentional data point from ichthyological survey work rather than a commercial import — the general Nemacheilidae care principles would apply: cool-to-cold, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water over a stone or gravel substrate with a mature biofilm surface to graze, no still or warm water, and cautious use of medications given the family's typically thin, near-scaleless skin. None of this is confirmed for this specific species and should be treated as an informed inference from its genus and habitat, not documented care advice.

Conservation

Triplophysa gerzeensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. It is known only from the Gertse County area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in Xizang, China, a remote high-altitude region where survey effort for small stream fishes is generally limited.

As with many single-locality Tibetan Triplophysa, the species' true range and population status are poorly documented, and its narrow known distribution alone would typically be a flag for conservation concern if it were ever formally reviewed. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade pressure on this species — its conservation picture, to the extent one exists, is governed entirely by the condition of its native Tibetan Plateau stream habitat, not by collection.
