Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa leptosoma was described by the Russian ichthyologist Solomon Herzenstein in 1888, originally placed in the genus Nemachilus (also spelled Nemacheilus in later literature) along with most of the region's small stream loaches known at the time. The nomenclatural history of the Central and East Asian nemacheilids has been reworked repeatedly since — Nemachilus and Noemacheilus were split apart, and many species were redistributed among newer genera including Triplophysa, Schistura and Barbatula. Modern taxonomic treatment places this species in Triplophysa, and that combination, Triplophysa leptosoma (Herzenstein, 1888), is used here.
Triplophysa is by far the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, with well over a hundred described species concentrated on and around the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The genus has diversified extensively in the cold, isolated headwater systems of that uplift, and species-level identification within it is a specialist task; T. leptosoma is one of the described species from that radiation.
Morphology
Like other members of its family, Triplophysa leptosoma is a small, elongate, laterally slender loach built for holding position and darting over gravel and cobble in current. FishBase records a maximum length of about 5.5 in standard length, a moderate size for a stone loach. As in other nemacheilids, the skin carries no true scales or only vestigial ones, leaving the fish effectively naked-skinned — a feature shared across the family that has real consequences for how sensitive these fish are to medication.

Habitat
This species is associated with the cold, fast-flowing streams and lakes of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. FishBase lists it as endemic to Xizang (Tibet), China, based on a 1995 survey of Xizang's fish resources, while phylogeographic work places populations further north and east across the plateau system — including the Qilian Mountains area of Qinghai, the upper Shule River (Changma section), and the Jinsha and Yalong river basins in Sichuan. Triplophysa as a genus ranges from the high Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, at an average elevation around 4,0 ft, down through the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at 1,000–2,0 ft, occupying cold, fast, clear streams and associated lakes throughout.
This is unambiguously a coldwater, high-altitude habitat, not a warm lowland one. The water is clear, well-oxygenated and swift-flowing, typical of glacier- and snowmelt-fed plateau drainages, and FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic in a temperate freshwater setting.
Feeding
FishBase gives Triplophysa leptosoma a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a mid-level benthic consumer rather than a strict herbivore or apex predator. This fits the general pattern for stone and brook loaches, which forage over the streambed for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — picked from among gravel and stones in fast water.

There is no record of this species being bred, or even reliably kept, in the aquarium hobby, and its slow-growing, cold-adapted life history (implied by its low estimated resilience) makes captive breeding an unlikely prospect without dedicated cold-water facilities. Triplophysa leptosoma has essentially no documented presence in the aquarium trade. A search of hobbyist and aquarium-wiki resources turned up no species-specific care information; the only comparable note found concerns a related Tibetan stone loach, Triplophysa stoliczkai, which is described as rare in the hobby — suggesting this genus as a whole is a marginal presence at best outside specialist coldwater keepers.
Were it to be kept, the biology summarized above points clearly to what it would need: cold, clean, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water rather than a typical tropical setup, a gravel or cobble substrate to forage and shelter in, and — as with other nemacheilids — caution with medications given its scaleless or near-scaleless skin. Given the almost total absence of documented husbandry, any care recommendation beyond matching its native cold, high-flow habitat would be speculation rather than fact.
Conservation
Triplophysa leptosoma has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. FishBase notes the species has low vulnerability to fishing pressure but also low population resilience, meaning that if it were to decline, recovery would be slow.
As a plateau-stream endemic known mainly from scattered survey and phylogeography records rather than population monitoring, its conservation status is essentially unstudied. Many narrow-range Triplophysa species on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau face potential pressure from hydrological change, damming and climate-driven shifts in glacier- and snowmelt-fed stream flow, but no species-specific assessment of those pressures for T. leptosoma was found in the sources consulted.
