Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa stolickai was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1866. The species has also long circulated in the literature under the spelling Triplophysa stoliczkae, and a 2019 molecular study (published in PMC, "Multiple convergent events created a nominal widespread species: Triplophysa stoliczkae (Steindachner, 1866) (Cobitoidea: Nemacheilidae)") confirms both the taxonomic validity of the species and its placement in the family Nemacheilidae, while noting that populations lumped under this name across its huge range likely represent a species complex shaped by repeated, independent colonization events rather than a single uniform lineage.
It belongs to Triplophysa, by far the largest genus of stone loaches, with well over 200 described species spread across the mountains and plateaus of Central and East Asia. The genus itself sits in Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the biggest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. The specific epithet honours Ferdinand Stoliczka (1838–1874), the Austrian-born palaeontologist and naturalist who collected extensively across the Himalaya and Central Asia before his early death on an expedition to Tibet.
Morphology
Triplophysa stolickai has the classic stone-loach build: an elongated, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened head and belly suited to holding position on the streambed, and small, low-set eyes. FishBase records a maximum length of about 6.5 in total length, making it a mid-sized member of the genus. Feeding
FishBase gives Triplophysa stolickai a trophic level of about 3.1, placing it as a secondary consumer and benthic micro-predator, in keeping with the rest of the stone-loach family. As with other nemacheilids, its near-scaleless skin means it should be treated with the same caution given to other stone loaches around medications and copper-based treatments, using reduced doses and gentle products where treatment is unavoidable. Given the almost total absence of husbandry information, prospective keepers are better served researching other, well-documented Triplophysa or hillstream species with established aquarium track records; at present this is best regarded as a species for researchers and specialist biotope enthusiasts rather than the general trade.

The species is widely distributed across a large swath of high-altitude Asia — from Iran and Afghanistan through Pakistan, India, Bhutan and into Tibet and western China — which likely underlies its Least Concern status despite the specialized, fragile nature of high-altitude spring and stream habitats. It is not part of the aquarium trade in any significant way, so ornamental collection is not considered a pressure on wild populations; broader risks to Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau stream ecosystems, such as glacial and hydrological change, are a general concern for the region's cold-water fish fauna rather than a documented threat specific to this species.
