Brycon insignis is a large, powerfully built river characin endemic to the Paraíba do Sul basin of southeastern Brazil, where it was once a mainstay food fish for communities along the river. Adults reach nearly 14.5 in standard length — this is not a community-tank tetra but a muscular, migratory, largely fruit-and-leaf-eating characin built for open water. Dammed rivers, blocked migration routes and habitat loss have pushed the species to Endangered on the IUCN Red List, and its story is now as much about a vanishing migration as it is about a fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycon insignis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1877. It belongs to the genus Brycon, a group of mid-to-large-bodied Neotropical river characins historically placed in the family Characidae but increasingly recognised — per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — under the family Bryconidae, separate from the true tetras. Brycon itself sits within the broader minor-characin assemblage alongside the hemiodontids, curimatas and Prochilodus, groups that range from quiet detritus grazers to powerful predatory or omnivorous river fish; Brycon falls toward the large, muscular end of that spectrum.

The species is endemic to the Paraíba do Sul River basin in Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil, and does not occur naturally outside that single river system. It is known locally as "piabanha" and in some English-language sources as the tiete tetra, though the latter name is potentially confusing since the species' true range is the Paraíba do Sul, not the Tietê River.

Morphology

Brycon insignis has the classic Brycon build: a moderately elongated, laterally compressed, silvery body with a forked tail and a robust, slightly underslung jaw lined with strong teeth adapted for a mixed diet of animal prey and plant material. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 14.5 in, making it one of the larger characins in the minor-characin group covered here — a genuinely substantial river fish rather than a small shoaling tetra.

Colouration is typically silver overall with a darker dorsal surface, consistent with an open-water, actively swimming fish that relies on countershading for camouflage against predators from above and below. Habitat

The species is restricted to the Paraíba do Sul River system in Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil — a river basin that is heavily developed, industrialised and fragmented by dams. Unlike the vast, still relatively intact Amazon and Orinoco systems that host most of the fish covered in this atlas, the Paraíba do Sul is a comparatively small, single-basin range, which is a major factor in the species' vulnerability.

As a migratory characin, Brycon insignis depends on being able to move along the river to reach spawning grounds, and connectivity within the basin — rather than any single water-quality parameter — is the defining habitat requirement for the species. The cache does not report specific temperature or pH figures for wild populations; readers should treat any aquarium water-parameter guidance as inferred from the genus and basin rather than measured for this species specifically.

Feeding

Brycon insignis shows a diet that shifts with age. FishBase reports that juveniles feed on fishes and insects, with occasional leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds, while adults become largely vegetarian, taking leaves and fruit along with a smaller proportion of insects and small fish. This ontogenetic shift toward plant material in adulthood is typical of larger Brycon species, many of which forage under the flooded-forest and riparian canopy for fallen fruit and seeds — a role ecologically similar to that played by pacus (Colossoma, Piaractus) elsewhere in South America.

In the aquarium, this dietary pattern means adult fish should receive a diet weighted toward fruit, vegetable matter and quality omnivore or herbivore pellets, supplemented with some protein, rather than being fed as a straightforward predator.

Mating

Brycon insignis is a migratory spawner: FishBase records a spawning season of December to February, coinciding with the austral summer wet season in southeastern Brazil. Females mature at around 10 in standard length (roughly three years old) and males mature earlier, at around 8 in (roughly two years old). As with many large migratory characins, adults move upriver to reach spawning areas, a life-history trait that makes the species acutely sensitive to dams and other barriers that block movement within the Paraíba do Sul.

The cache does not document reliable external sexual dimorphism for this species beyond the difference in maturation size between the sexes; no distinct colour or fin difference is recorded.

Breeding

As a long-distance migratory spawner, Brycon insignis follows the pattern seen in other large Brycon and related big-river characins: reproduction depends on migration to appropriate spawning stretches of the Paraíba do Sul rather than on any nest-building or parental-care behaviour, and there is no indication in the cache of guarding or brooding of eggs or fry. This life history places the species firmly in the same broad category as the pacus and flannelmouth migrators (Prochilodus, Semaprochilodus) covered elsewhere in this atlas — species that are essentially not bred in home aquaria.

The cache does not report any record of the species being spawned in captivity, whether at hobby or commercial scale. Given its dependence on free river migration for reproduction and its now-fragmented, dammed native basin, Brycon insignis should be treated as a species that is not currently reproduced in the aquarium trade; any captive-bred stock claims should be treated with caution absent documentation.

Brycon insignis is rarely seen in the hobby, and for good reason: at nearly 14.5 in standard length, this is a large, powerful, active swimming fish that requires a correspondingly large aquarium with strong water movement and robust filtration, not a typical community setup. Its adult, largely plant-based diet also means keepers need to offer fruit, vegetable matter and quality prepared foods rather than treating it as a predatory characin.

Because the species is Endangered and endemic to a single, heavily dammed Brazilian river basin, any specimens that do appear in the trade should raise real questions about provenance — wild collection from an already-declining, geographically restricted population is a conservation concern, and this is not a species that should be purchased on impulse or kept without a firm plan for its eventual large adult size. As with other large river characins in this group, it should never be released into the wild if a keeper can no longer accommodate it.

Conservation

Brycon insignis is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 7 November 2018. The species is endemic to the Paraíba do Sul basin, and its population has declined over recent decades due to habitat loss and the construction of hydroelectric dams, which fragment the river and block the migratory routes the species needs to reach its spawning grounds. FishBase similarly notes that the species was traditionally an important food fish for people along the river but is now threatened by dam construction.

A 2024–2025 genetic-diversity study (Wiley Online Library, DOI 10.1002/aqc.70367) revisited the species a decade after earlier environmental disturbances and confirmed the ongoing pressure on remaining populations from habitat fragmentation, underscoring that this is an active, worsening conservation concern rather than a historical one. Because the species occupies a single, small, industrialised river basin, further dam development or water-quality decline in the Paraíba do Sul system represents a direct threat to its continued survival.
