Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus copelandii was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1875, placing it in the headstander family Anostomidae within the order Characiformes — the same broad characin lineage that includes tetras, pacus and piranhas. The genus Leporinus (from the Latin lepus/leporinus, "hare-like", an old reference to the incisor-like front teeth) has historically held a large assemblage of striped, elongate South American species.
FishBase and recent cytogenetic work (including a karyotype study of the species published on PMC) record that this species has since been moved to the genus Hypomasticus, as Hypomasticus copelandii, as part of a broader taxonomic revision that split several Leporinus lineages into separate genera. This article retains the historically familiar combination Leporinus copelandii pending confirmation of current Catalog of Fishes standing; readers researching the species further may also find it listed as Hypomasticus copelandii. GBIF and other biodiversity databases confirm the original combination as valid nomenclature under Steindachner's 1875 description.
Morphology
Like other members of its family, Leporinus copelandii has an elongate, only moderately compressed body built for steady cruising and grazing rather than burst speed, a small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth set with the chisel-like incisors typical of Anostomidae, and a forked tail. Seriously Fish records a minimum adult size of 8 in standard length, with FishBase listing a maximum published length of 21.5 in total length — a genuinely large aquarium fish by the time it is fully grown, even though juveniles sold in the trade are a fraction of that size.
Colouration follows the striped or spotted pattern common across many Leporinus and Anostomus species, which along with the steep, head-down grazing posture makes headstanders instantly recognisable in a mixed characin display. As with most of this group, no reliable external sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species.
Habitat
The species is native to southeastern Brazil, restricted to the Paraíba do Sul and Doce river basins, with records spanning the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The IUCN Red List places it within Northeastern Atlantic Forest freshwater ecoregions and notes it undertakes short-distance migrations within its river systems.
Seriously Fish records water conditions of roughly 68–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 and hardness of 36–215 ppm, a fairly wide tolerance consistent with a river-dwelling grazer rather than a specialist of stable blackwater. In the wild the fish forages over submerged wood, rock and sediment in flowing to moderately flowing river habitat, consistent with its need for strong water movement in the aquarium (see "In the aquarium").
Feeding
Leporinus copelandii is a benthic grazer and aufwuchs feeder, cruising at its characteristic oblique, head-down angle to rasp algae, biofilm and associated small invertebrates and organic matter from submerged wood, rock and sediment. Seriously Fish specifically advises against high-protein foods for this species, underscoring that its digestive system is built around a largely vegetable and detrital diet rather than a carnivorous one.
In the aquarium, a diet weighted toward vegetable matter — blanched vegetables, spirulina- and algae-based foods, and quality herbivore-leaning pellets or wafers — supplemented with only modest amounts of protein reflects this natural grazing habit. Like several of its Leporinus and Anostomus relatives, this species may also nip at soft-leaved plants and, in some individuals, at the fins of slower tankmates, which is worth planning around rather than being surprised by.
Mating
No courtship behaviour specific to Leporinus copelandii is documented in the cited sources. Headstanders in general do not show clear external sexual dimorphism, and no colour, fin or body-shape differences between the sexes have been reported for this species.
Breeding
Seriously Fish states plainly that breeding has not been recorded in captivity for Leporinus copelandii. Among headstanders more broadly, egg-scattering with no parental care is the typical mode, and a small number of Leporinus and Anostomus species have been bred or farmed, but this particular species should be considered essentially unbred in the hobby based on available evidence — there is no aquarium spawning account to report, and none should be inferred.
In the aquarium
This is a large aquarium fish that needs to be sized for its adult length of up to 21.5 in, not its juvenile appearance: Seriously Fish specifies a minimum tank footprint of 180×23.5 in along with strong water circulation, citing turnover of four to five times the tank volume per hour to mimic its flowing native rivers. A sandy substrate with leaf litter and driftwood suits its grazing habit and gives it material to forage over.
Keepers should be aware this species is a prodigious jumper, so a tight-fitting, well-secured cover is essential — a bare or loosely covered top is a real risk of losing the fish. As with many Leporinus and Anostomus, individuals can become territorial and nippy toward tankmates and may graze on soft aquarium plants as they mature, so tankmates should be chosen for robustness and speed rather than delicacy, and keepers should not assume the calm grazing behaviour of a young specimen will persist unchanged into adulthood.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Leporinus copelandii as Least Concern, reflecting a still-viable population across its native Paraíba do Sul and Doce river basins. The assessment nonetheless flags habitat threatened by human impact, singling out the Doce River in particular — the site of the catastrophic 2015 Mariana tailings-dam breach, one of Brazil's worst environmental disasters, which sent mine waste through much of the river's length.
As a species restricted to a fairly small, human-pressured river system in southeastern Brazil rather than a wide Amazonian range, its Least Concern status should be read as a snapshot rather than a guarantee, and ongoing water-quality and habitat pressure in the Doce basin is a reasonable long-term watch item even though the fish is not currently classified as threatened.
