Brycon medemi was described by the Danish-Colombian ichthyologist Gerhard Marcuzzi Dahl in 1960. It belongs to the family Bryconidae, a group of Neotropical characins historically lumped inside a broader Characidae but now generally treated as its own family, distinguished from the piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae by a more elongate, streamlined body built for sustained swimming rather than a deep, disc-like profile.
