Taxonomy & naming
Bunocephalus colombianus was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, and to the genus Bunocephalus, a group of small, flattened, scaleless South American catfishes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name, and treats Bunocephalus colombianus as a distinct species within its genus.
The genus name Bunocephalus derives from Greek bounos ("hill" or "mound") and kephale ("head"), a reference to the raised, knobby texture of the head shield typical of the genus. The species epithet colombianus simply denotes the type country, Colombia, reflecting the restricted South American river systems where the fish was first collected and where it remains endemic.
Morphology
Like other banjo catfishes, Bunocephalus colombianus has a strongly depressed, disc-like head and forebody that tapers abruptly into a slender, whip-like tail — the shape that gives the family its common name, resembling the body and neck of a banjo. The skin is entirely scaleless and instead bears small tubercles and a rough, granular texture, particularly over the head. Colouration is cryptic: mottled sandy brown, grey and tan tones that break up its outline against river sand and leaf litter.
Adult size in Bunocephalus colombianus tops out at a modest 4.5 in standard length (FishBase; Scotcat.com) — this is a genuinely small catfish that never approaches the scale of the family's larger relatives, but it should still be given a tank matched to its adult length rather than its juvenile size. As in all Aspredinidae, the skin lacks scales entirely, which makes the species considerably more sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard fish treatments than a scaled fish; doses should be reduced and the fish watched closely if treatment is ever needed. It also lacks the stiff, locking pectoral spines seen in many other catfish families, being a soft-bodied, well-camouflaged ambush and detritus forager rather than an armoured one.
Habitat
Bunocephalus colombianus is endemic to Colombia, known from the Atrato, Magdalena, Cauca, San Jorge, Sinú and Patía river basins (Scotcat.com), with its type locality at Raspadura. These are warm lowland Neotropical rivers and their tributaries, where the species lives over soft sandy or silty substrates, often partly buried, in slow to moderate current.
Water conditions across its range are moderate rather than extreme: Scotcat.com reports a temperature range of 72–79 °F and a pH range of 6.0–8.0, spanning mildly acidic to mildly alkaline water rather than the soft blackwater conditions associated with some other South American catfish. This is consistent with a fish adapted to a range of turbid, sediment-rich lowland river habitats across several connected basins rather than a single narrow, specialised biotope.
Feeding
Bunocephalus colombianus is a nocturnal benthic forager. By day it lies buried or motionless on the substrate, relying on its cryptic pattern and flattened shape to avoid detection; at night it becomes active and works the bottom for small invertebrates and detritus, in the manner typical of Aspredinidae.
In the aquarium it takes frozen bloodworm and tubifex readily, along with sinking tablet foods (Scotcat.com). Because it is a night forager, food is best offered after the lights go out so it is not out-competed by more active, sighted tankmates; a sandy substrate lets it settle in and forage naturally rather than sitting exposed on bare glass or gravel.
Mating
Specific courtship and spawning behaviour for Bunocephalus colombianus has not been documented in the sources available. In several banjo catfishes (family Aspredinidae), the female is known to carry the fertilised eggs attached to the skin of her belly, via small fleshy stalks (cotylephores) that develop for the purpose, until the eggs hatch — a distinctive form of external egg-carrying rather than nest-guarding or free-scattering. Whether this applies to B. colombianus specifically has not been confirmed in the available literature, and no wild spawning account for this species was found in the cache.
Breeding
Breeding of Bunocephalus colombianus is essentially undocumented; no aquarium spawning reports were found in the cache. Given the egg-carrying reproductive mode reported in some other Aspredinidae, any successful home spawning would likely involve the female carrying eggs attached to her belly skin rather than a bubble-nest, cave-spawn or open scatter — but this has not been confirmed for this species specifically. Prospective breeders should treat this as an unknown, poorly studied area rather than assume any particular mode, and report on egg-carrying behaviour to keepers and researchers if it is observed.

Bunocephalus colombianus stays small — to about 4.5 in — but still benefits from a tank of reasonable footprint with a soft sandy substrate it can bury into, since it is a substrate specialist rather than a fish that perches on rock or wood. Match its water to the cache's reported range: 72–79 °F and pH 6.0–8.0, a moderate, undemanding window rather than soft acid blackwater.
Because the skin is entirely scaleless, treat any medication conservatively, particularly copper-based treatments, which this species — like loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned catfish — tolerates poorly at full strength. It is peaceful and entirely inoffensive toward tankmates, but being nocturnal and cryptic it is easy to overlook or to accidentally starve in a boisterous community; feed after lights-out and provide fine sand plus some leaf litter or shallow cover so it can express its natural buried, ambush lifestyle. It does not need to be netted roughly — it lacks the locking spines of many catfish families, but gentle handling in a container rather than a net is still good practice for any scaleless fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List records Bunocephalus colombianus as Data Deficient; no dedicated modern assessment page for the species was located, and its conservation status has not been formally evaluated with population data. This is not unusual for a small, cryptic, nocturnal catfish restricted to Colombian river systems, where obtaining reliable population trend data is difficult.
As an endemic confined to the Atrato, Magdalena, Cauca, San Jorge, Sinú and Patía basins, the species' fortunes are tied to the health of these Colombian lowland rivers, which face pressures from sedimentation, deforestation and water-quality degradation typical of the region.
