Taxonomy & naming
Curimatopsis microlepis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — the toothless characins, a family of small to medium detritivorous and algivorous fishes within the order Characiformes that also includes the curimatas proper (Curimata, Cyphocharax, Psectrogaster) and their relatives. Curimatidae sits within the same broad characiform radiation as Serrasalmidae (the piranhas and pacus), but the two families diverge sharply in biology: curimatids lack functional jaw teeth as adults and feed on fine detritus rather than flesh, plants or fruit.
The genus Curimatopsis was revised by Richard P. Vari in a 1982 systematic treatment of the genus, which confirmed C. microlepis as a valid, distinct species rather than a synonym of the similar and better-known C. macrolepis. The two species can be difficult to tell apart in the field, and Vari's work noted cryptic diversity within the genus that has not been fully resolved by subsequent genetic study. The specific epithet microlepis is Greek for "small scale" (micro-, small; lepis, scale), distinguishing this species from its larger-scaled congener macrolepis. No common name is in wide use for this species in English-language hobby literature.
Morphology
Curimatopsis microlepis has not been directly measured in the sources reviewed for this article, and no maximum length figure specific to the species could be confirmed. Its close congener C. macrolepis — the better-documented and more frequently traded member of the genus — reaches roughly 2.5 in, and Curimatopsis as a genus is characterised by a small, compressed, silvery body typical of minor detritivorous characins: a short, blunt, toothless mouth adapted for grazing rather than biting, a single dorsal fin, and an adipose fin shared with most characiforms. Given the shared body plan and the close relationship between the two species, C. microlepis is inferred to be of similarly modest size, but this should be read as an inference from a congener rather than a confirmed measurement for C. microlepis itself.
As in most Curimatidae, coloration is unremarkable: a plain silver body without strong pattern, consistent with a fish that relies on shoaling and cover rather than camouflage or display for predator avoidance.
Habitat
Curimatopsis microlepis is native to the Amazon River basin. Within the broader range occupied by the genus — which spans the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraguay and Guianas river systems — the species inhabits warm, soft-to-neutral, slightly acidic lowland waters typical of Amazonian floodplain and channel habitats. Specific locality data for C. microlepis is sparse; the species is known from relatively few museum collections, which is itself informative about how rarely it is encountered relative to more common Curimatidae.
As with many small Amazonian characins, structure and current are likely to matter alongside water chemistry — fine sediment and slow-moving or backwater habitat would suit its detritivorous feeding mode — but published habitat descriptions specific to this species are not available and should not be assumed beyond the genus-level picture.
Feeding
Curimatopsis, like the rest of Curimatidae, are toothless detritivores. The genus feeds on fine organic detritus, decaying plant matter, biofilm and associated microorganisms sifted from the substrate rather than on live prey, algae mats, or fruit and seeds. This distinguishes the group sharply from the predatory Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus piranhas and from the frugivorous pacus elsewhere in the same broader characiform lineage — Curimatopsis are quiet grazers, not hunters.
In the rare cases where Curimatidae are kept in aquaria, they take soft prepared and live foods readily — finely crushed flake, Artemia (brine shrimp), cyclops and similar small soft foods — standing in for the natural detritus-and-biofilm diet. No live aquatic plants are eaten; this is not a plant-shredding group.
Mating
No courtship behaviour has been documented for Curimatopsis microlepis in the sources available for this article. The species' rarity in both scientific collections and the aquarium trade means basic reproductive biology — pairing behaviour, spawning triggers, any external sexual dimorphism — remains essentially unrecorded. Data sparse.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the hobby or scientific literature for Curimatopsis microlepis. The species is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade — its more commonly traded congener, C. macrolepis, is likewise rarely bred by hobbyists — and there is no confirmed record of spawning mode, egg type, or parental care for this species. Given the toothless-detritivore body plan shared across Curimatidae, an open-water or scatter-type spawning mode (as seen in many small characins without nest-guarding structures) would be a plausible guess by family resemblance, but this article will not assign a breeding mode without direct evidence. Prospective breeders should treat this as entirely unknown territory.
In the aquarium
Curimatopsis microlepis is not a species a hobbyist is likely to encounter: it appears to be very rarely imported or effectively unavailable in the trade, with C. macrolepis standing in as the genus's known trade representative. Where Curimatopsis species do appear, they are described as quiet, undemanding shoaling detritivores best kept in a group, in soft, slightly acidic, warm water (roughly 72–79 °F based on trade accounts for the genus), with soft foods on offer since these fish cannot bite or tear larger items.
Because this species is essentially absent from commercial supply, any care guidance here is necessarily extrapolated from the genus and from the better-known C. macrolepis rather than from direct experience with C. microlepis. A prospective keeper who somehow sources this species should treat it as an unknown quantity and proceed cautiously, mirroring general Curimatidae husbandry rather than assuming species-specific requirements.
Conservation
Curimatopsis microlepis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. This is unsurprising for a small, obscure Amazonian characin known from relatively few specimens and with no significant commercial or aquarium trade to draw research attention; many similarly minor, single-basin characins share this Not Evaluated status simply because no formal assessment has been undertaken, not because the species is known to be secure or at risk.
No species-specific conservation concerns or threats have been documented. As with other Amazon basin fish with sparse distribution data, general pressures on the basin — deforestation, water-quality change and habitat modification — are relevant long-term considerations, but there is no evidence available to state that C. microlepis is currently impacted by them.
