Leporinus amazonicus was described by Santos & Zuanon in 2008, placing it within Leporinus, a large genus of South American characins in the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — under the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and continues to recognise Leporinus amazonicus as a distinct species within the genus.
Anostomidae as a whole is defined by the family's signature feeding posture: an oblique-to-vertical, head-down orientation used while grazing surfaces for algae and biofilm, a habit shared with the related genus Anostomus (the true "headstanders" of the aquarium trade) and, in a gentler form, with the small nano-grazer Chilodus. Leporinus species are frequently confused with one another and with Anostomus in the hobby because of overlapping banded colour patterns, so identification should rest on described diagnostic characters rather than pattern alone.
Morphology
Leporinus amazonicus has the elongated, cylindrical-to-torpedo body shape typical of the genus, with a small terminal-to-subterminal mouth adapted for grazing rather than grasping prey. FishBase records a maximum size of 10 in standard length, which places it among the medium-to-large end of aquarium-relevant Leporinus — a fish that, at full size, is well beyond the small "banded" schooling characin many buyers picture.
