Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus acutidens was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1837, within the large characiform family Anostomidae — the headstanders — a group defined by an upturned mouth and a habit of feeding at an oblique, head-down angle. The genus Leporinus is one of the largest in the family, with well over 80 recognised species distributed across the rivers of South America, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for which of the many described forms remain valid.
No old genus combination is documented for this species; it has stood in Leporinus since Valenciennes's original description. The genus name itself comes from the Latin lepus/leporis, "hare," a reference to the incisor-like front teeth of these fish, which resemble a rabbit's more than the typical characin dentition. The species epithet acutidens — "sharp tooth" — reinforces the same feature, from the Latin acutus (sharp) and dens (tooth).
Morphology
Leporinus acutidens has the classic Leporinus silhouette: an elongated, slightly compressed, torpedo-shaped body carried on a small, terminal, slightly upturned mouth armed with chisel-like incisors suited to scraping rather than biting. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 13 in, making this one of the larger species commonly seen in the genus and considerably bigger than the handful of centimetres many buyers expect from a juvenile in a shop tank.
Colouration follows the banded pattern typical of many Leporinus — dark, vertical or oblique bars or blotches over a silvery-to-golden body, though exact pattern and contrast vary somewhat with age, mood and individual. As in most of the genus, there is no reliable external difference between the sexes documented for this species.
Habitat
The species is native to the Amazon River basin and the rivers of the Guianas in northern South America, occupying river channels and associated floodplain habitats across that range. FishBase gives a water chemistry range of pH 5.6–7.2 and hardness 0–18 dGH, consistent with the generally soft, mildly acidic-to-near-neutral water typical of much of the Amazon basin, though local conditions vary between blackwater, whitewater and clearwater tributaries.
Within these rivers, headstanders like L. acutidens are typically found around submerged wood, rocky substrate and marginal vegetation, the same structures they graze for algae and biofilm — habitat quality here is as much about foraging surface as it is about shelter.
Feeding
Leporinus acutidens is an omnivorous grazer, foraging in the characteristic oblique, head-down posture that gives headstanders their name as it works over wood, rock and substrate for algae and aufwuchs. FishBase records it taking dried foods (flake, green flake, pellets) and frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, Mysis) in captivity, and related Leporinus species are well documented as browsers of soft-leaved aquatic plants and vegetable matter as well.
In the aquarium this translates to a diet that should lean vegetable-forward — algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina-based foods and quality vegetable flake — supplemented with occasional protein such as bloodworm or brine shrimp. A fish fed only meaty foods, or kept in a tank without any grazing surface, is more likely to turn its attention to plants and, potentially, tankmates' fins.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Leporinus acutidens is not well documented. FishBase records that females mature at around two years of age and males at one year, and that spawning in the wild runs from November to March with a peak between December and March — a pattern consistent with seasonal, flood-associated breeding rather than opportunistic pairing year-round.
No reliable external sexual dimorphism is documented for this species; as with much of the genus, keepers and breeders have little beyond maturity and condition to go on when trying to distinguish the sexes.
Breeding
Leporinus acutidens is an egg-scatterer, and FishBase notes that wild spawns can run from roughly 100,000 to 200,000 eggs, laid over densely vegetated substrate. This is a mass-spawning strategy typical of river-migratory characiforms rather than a paired, guarded event, and there is no parental care after spawning.
The species is rarely bred in home aquaria — as with many Leporinus and Anostomus, captive reproduction on this scale is impractical in a tank, and the fish available in the trade are effectively always wild-collected or, for some related species, farmed at commercial scale rather than hobbyist-bred. Anyone hoping to breed this fish at home should treat that as a long shot rather than an expectation.
In the aquarium
The single most important fact for a prospective keeper is the adult size: at up to 13 in, Leporinus acutidens needs a genuinely large, long aquarium, not the modest tank a small juvenile might suggest. Provide open swimming space alongside driftwood and rock for grazing, and expect this fish to sample soft-leaved plants — a heavily planted, delicate aquascape is not a good match for it.
Genus-wide, Leporinus and their close relatives Anostomus have a well-earned reputation as nippy, territorial fish that become more assertive with size and age; while no specific aggression data is documented for L. acutidens itself, keepers should plan for that possibility, choosing robust, similarly sized tankmates rather than small or slow-moving, long-finned fish. Water should stay within the soft, mildly acidic-to-near-neutral range recorded on FishBase (pH 5.6–7.2), at typical tropical community temperatures.
Conservation
Leporinus acutidens is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across the Amazon and Guiana river systems and the absence of any documented major threat to the species as a whole.
As with many characiforms across this range, the broader pressures facing Amazonian freshwater habitats — deforestation-linked sedimentation, damming and water-quality change — are relevant long-term watch items even though the species itself is not currently considered threatened.
