Leporinus amae is a small, subtropical headstander from the Uruguay River drainage of southern Brazil, named not for a person but for AMA — the environmental agency (Assessoria Para Meio Ambiente) involved in the surveys that turned it up. Like its relatives, it spends much of its time grazing biofilm and algae off rock and wood at a distinctive head-down, tail-up angle, and it stays modest in size compared to the larger, more notorious fin-nipping Leporinus species kept in the hobby. It is not a piranha and not dangerous, but headstanders as a group have a reputation — often deserved — for nipping fins and shredding soft plants, and this species should be chosen with that in mind rather than assumed to be a docile community grazer.

It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family named for the oblique, head-down posture many of its members adopt while grazing.

The genus Leporinus is large and taxonomically active, with species regularly reassessed against the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as the authority for valid names; this account follows the genus as currently recognised rather than any older combination. The species epithet "amae" is not the usual Latin honorific or descriptive term but an acronym: it references AMA (Assessoria Para Meio Ambiente), the environmental body connected with the fieldwork that led to the species' description, giving it one of the more unusual name origins among South American characins.

As a subtropical species from the Uruguay basin, it does not need — and should not be kept at — the warm, tropical temperatures suited to Amazonian characins; a cooler, well-oxygenated setup is more appropriate.

Headstanders as a group have a well-earned reputation for territoriality and fin-nipping, and while L. amae is smaller and reportedly less notorious than large congeners such as the black-banded leporinus, it should still be kept with robust, fast-moving tankmates rather than slow, long-finned fish. Expect it to graze on soft aquarium plants; hardy, tough-leaved species or artificial decor hold up better. Provide rockwork and driftwood to support natural grazing behaviour and to establish territories, which reduces aggression toward tankmates.

Conservation
