Leporinus agassizii is a slender, banded headstander from the upper Amazon basin, named for the Swiss-American naturalist Louis Agassiz. Like other members of its genus it swims and grazes at a distinctive oblique, head-down angle, picking algae and biofilm off submerged wood and rock in the fast, clear-to-blackwater tributaries of the Iça, Negro, Branco and Nanay drainages. It reaches a modest 9 in standard length, and like many of its relatives it can be a nippy, territorial fish as it matures — a fact easy to overlook next to its handsome, striped good looks. Taxonomy & naming

Leporinus agassizii was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1876, with the type locality on the Iça River in the upper Amazon basin of Brazil. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are recognisable by their oblique, head-down grazing posture and, in many species, a superficially trout-like or pike-like elongated body.

The genus Leporinus is large and taxonomically active; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for which combinations are currently valid, and species-level identification within the genus can be difficult without a specimen in hand, since body banding and proportions vary with age and population. This article keeps the classic combination Leporinus agassizii rather than proposing any revision; readers should treat genus-level headstander identification in the trade with some caution, as look-alike species are commonly mislabelled.

Morphology

Leporinus agassizii has the characteristic Leporinus body plan: an elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-like shape with a small, terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth adapted for grazing rather than seizing prey. FishBase records a maximum size of 9 in standard length, placing it among the more modestly sized members of a genus that includes species reaching 15.5 in or more.

As is typical for the genus, expect a base colouration of silver to golden-olive overlaid with dark vertical or blotched banding along the flanks, though the exact pattern for this species is not detailed in the sources reviewed here; prospective keepers should treat photographs and pattern claims with some caution given how often Leporinus species are confused with one another in the trade.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the upper Amazon basin, with its type locality on the Iça River and further records from Lake Tefé and the Nanay, Negro and Branco rivers — a mix of clearwater and blackwater tributary systems in Brazil and adjacent Peru. In the aquarium

At a documented maximum of 9 in SL, Leporinus agassizii is a mid-sized characin that needs real swimming room — a long tank of at least 59–71 in is a reasonable minimum once the fish approaches adult size, with a tight-fitting lid, since headstanders and their relatives are capable jumpers. Like many Leporinus and Anostomus species, individuals can become nippy and territorial with age, particularly toward slower or long-finned tankmates and toward their own kind if kept in insufficient numbers or space; keeping them in an appropriately sized group in a spacious tank tends to diffuse aggression better than keeping a lone fish or a crowded pair.

Diet in the aquarium should follow the grazing pattern documented above: blanched vegetables and algae-based foods as a staple, with occasional protein. Expect the fish to browse soft-leaved plants, so hardy or unpalatable species (Anubias, Java fern, Vallisneria) are a safer planting choice than delicate stems. Water should be kept warm and on the soft, mildly acidic side, consistent with its upper-Amazon origin, though exact parameters specific to this species are not documented and a general Amazon-tributary target is the reasonable default.

Conservation

Leporinus agassizii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is treated here as Not Evaluated.
