Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus altipinnis was described by the Russian-American ichthyologist Nikolai Borodin in 1929. It belongs to the genus Leporinus within the family Anostomidae, the headstanders — a Neotropical characiform family whose members are named for their characteristic head-down, oblique grazing posture. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the currently accepted placement of the species within Leporinus.
A Borodin-era redescription documents a striking ontogenetic change in the species' dark-bar pattern as fish grow: roughly five bars are visible at 1.5 in standard length, increasing to eight bars by 2.5–4 in SL, ten bars around 5.5 in SL, and thirteen to fourteen bars in fish over 8 in SL. That progression is a useful identification note in itself, since it means small juveniles and large adults of the same species can look markedly different, and it also signals that the species keeps growing well past the 8 in mark documented in the literature.
Morphology
Leporinus altipinnis has the classic headstander build shared across the genus: an elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body, a relatively small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth suited to grazing rather than grasping prey, and dark vertical bars crossing a silvery-to-olive body. As noted above, the bar count rises sharply with growth, from about five bars in small juveniles to thirteen or fourteen in adults over 8 in SL — a specimen's bar pattern is therefore tied closely to its size and age rather than being a fixed field mark.
Published data document the species at over 8 in standard length (roughly 8 in and up), and the growth trend implied by the bar-count data suggests it does not stop there; treat 8 in as a floor for adult size planning, not a ceiling. Like other Leporinus, its fins are unremarkable in shape but its swimming posture is not: this is a fish that habitually holds itself at a steep, head-down angle while grazing surfaces, a behaviour that gives the whole family its common name.
Habitat
Leporinus altipinnis is documented from the Iténez-Guaporé river basin in South America, with further records from the Amazon basin — including the Arapiuns and Negro rivers — and from tributaries of the Orinoco basin. Across this range it is associated with black-water river systems, the tannin-stained, structurally complex channels and margins typical of much of the Amazon and Orinoco drainages, where it grazes surfaces such as submerged wood and rock in the flow.

As with many Leporinus and Anostomus, individuals can be territorial and prone to fin-nipping, particularly toward slow-moving or long-finned tankmates, and this tendency tends to worsen with age and cramped quarters; keepers should choose robust, fast tankmates or accommodate the fish's temperament with generous space rather than mixing it into a delicate community. Provide a vegetable-rich diet as described above and expect a hardy, active, visually striking fish that is more demanding of space and tankmate choice than of water chemistry precision.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Leporinus altipinnis as Least Concern, consistent with a species recorded across a broad span of the Amazon, Orinoco and Iténez-Guaporé drainages rather than being confined to a single threatened watershed.
