Leporinus aripuanaensis was described in 1981 by the Brazilian ichthyologists José Cezar Garavello and Geraldo Mendes dos Santos, with a species epithet that simply marks its type locality in the Aripuanã River basin. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a family whose members are recognised across the Neotropics by their oblique, head-down grazing posture and, in many genera, a superficially pike-like or elongate body shape.
