Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus bahiensis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1875, based on material from the coastal river basins of Bahia state, Brazil — the region the species name commemorates. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and to the large genus Leporinus, whose more than 90 valid species (per the Catalog of Fishes, Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) are defined by a superior or supraterminal mouth, a body typically marked with dark blotches or bars, and the oblique, head-down grazing posture that gives the group its common name.
A genome-wide SNP study (Oxford Academic, Systematic Biology) examining Leporinus populations across the isolated Bahian coastal drainages found that fish currently identified as L. bahiensis actually represent a species complex, with phylogeographic structure driven by staggered headwater captures — episodes where a stream from one river basin was geologically "captured" by a neighbouring basin, carrying its fish fauna along. That work signals the group's taxonomy in this region is not fully settled, but the name L. bahiensis remains the valid designation for this account. A taxonomic description paper (redescribing L. melanopleura and describing two new eastern-Brazil Leporinus species) also references L. bahiensis material, underscoring how tightly bound this fish is to its home region and how easily it can be confused with close relatives from neighbouring coastal basins.
Morphology
Leporinus bahiensis shows the classic headstander build: an elongated, moderately compressed body, a superior mouth suited to grazing surfaces above it, and a dental formula of 3/4 (three teeth in the upper jaw row, four in the lower) typical of the genus. FishBase records 35 lateral-line scales and 16 circumpeduncular scales, with a colour pattern of three round, dark blotches strung along the lateral line and brown bars crossing the dorsum — a pattern that helps distinguish it from other eastern-Brazilian Leporinus.

Habitat
The species is restricted to freshwater river systems draining to the coast of Bahia state in eastern Brazil, a subtropical region distinct from the Amazon and Paraná basins that hold most of the genus's diversity. FishBase and GBIF occurrence records place it specifically within these coastal Bahian drainages, and Encyclopedia of Life likewise lists it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of subtropical South America.
