Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus bleheri was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1999 and placed in the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes. The genus Leporinus is one of the largest in the family, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference point for its currently valid species and synonymies; L. bleheri has not been affected by the kind of wholesale generic reshuffling seen elsewhere in Serrasalmidae, and remains in Leporinus.
The species epithet honours Heiko Bleher, the German-Brazilian aquarium explorer and collector whose expeditions brought many South American fishes into the hobby and the scientific literature. In the trade it is most often sold simply as "Bleher's headstander" or "tiger headstander," the latter for its bold dark bars, and it is sometimes confused at import with other banded Leporinus and Anostomus species; the type locality in the Iténez-Guaporé basin is a useful anchor for confirming identification.
Morphology
Leporinus bleheri has the classic headstander build: an elongated, cylindrical-to-laterally-compressed body, a small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth suited to grazing, and a pattern of bold, dark vertical bars running down a yellow-to-golden-olive flank. The fins are typically clear to lightly yellow, and the overall look is bright and high-contrast next to the more subdued headstanders in the trade.
FishBase records a maximum published standard length of 5.5 in for the species, a modest size for the genus but still a substantial, muscular fish by the time it reaches adulthood — not a fish that stays small for long. No reliable external difference between males and females has been documented; see "Mating" below.
Habitat
The species is known from the Iténez-Guaporé river basin, a tributary system of the Amazon straddling the Bolivia-Brazil border in South America. FishBase describes it as a benthopelagic, tropical freshwater fish associated with weedy riverine habitat, consistent with the genus's general preference for vegetated margins, submerged wood and slower-flowing stretches where algae and biofilm accumulate on hard surfaces.
Detailed water-chemistry data from the wild population is sparse in the available literature, but the basin sits within the broader Amazonian pattern of warm, generally soft and mildly acidic-to-neutral water. Aquarium-care sources converge on roughly 75–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5 as suitable, soft and slightly acidic conditions that approximate the weedy river habitat FishBase describes, though this is drawn from hobbyist consensus rather than a published field study of the type locality.
Feeding
Leporinus bleheri is best understood as a grazer: in the wild it works over submerged wood, rock and plant surfaces in the genus's characteristic oblique, head-down posture, rasping off algae and the biofilm layer of microorganisms that grows on it, and supplementing this with small invertebrates. Hobbyist care guides describe it as omnivorous in practice, taking a mixed diet readily in the aquarium.
In the tank it should be offered a vegetable-forward diet — algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) and quality herbivore/omnivore pellets — alongside occasional protein such as bloodworm or small live and frozen foods. Because it grazes on soft-leaved plants as well as algae in a planted tank, keepers should expect some plant damage and choose robust, unpalatable species (Anubias, Java fern, Vallisneria) over delicate stem plants.
Mating
Very little is documented specifically for Leporinus bleheri's courtship behaviour. The wider Leporinus literature describes distinct breeding pairs forming and spawning over densely vegetated substrate, which is the best available guide for this species' likely behaviour, but published observation of L. bleheri courtship itself is essentially absent.
No reliable external sexual dimorphism has been documented for the species — sex cannot be confidently determined by colour or fin shape, and there is no established hobby method for visually sexing pairs.
Breeding
Leporinus bleheri is, so far as the literature records, an egg-scatterer with no parental care, consistent with the breeding pattern seen across most of the headstander group. Related Leporinus species such as L. elongatus and L. friderici are bred at aquaculture scale using hormonal induction for the food-fish and ornamental trade, and natural spawning in those relatives is associated with dense weedy vegetation — but captive or natural spawning of L. bleheri itself is not well documented, and it should be considered essentially unbred in the home aquarium.
Prospective breeders have little precedent to work from beyond the general Leporinus pattern: a conditioned pair, soft slightly acidic water, and dense fine-leaved vegetation as a scattering site. Anyone who succeeds is working ahead of the published record for this species, not repeating an established protocol.
In the aquarium
Leporinus bleheri needs a genuinely spacious tank — aquarium-care sources recommend 55 US gal and up — since it is an active, continuously cruising swimmer that reaches a solid adult size for its footprint, not a fish content to hover in a corner. Furnish the tank with driftwood, rockwork and robust plants to mimic its weedy river habitat and to give it grazing surfaces, and keep the water in the roughly 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 range that hobbyist consensus supports.
The fish most keepers need to hear clearly: this species, like much of the genus, has a real tendency to nip fins, particularly as it matures and especially if kept crowded or without enough space and grazing material to occupy it. It is generally peaceful toward its own kind in a properly sized group but is not a safe choice for small, slow-moving or long-finned community fish. Pair it with other robust, similarly active South American species, and do not treat it as an easy peaceful-community addition on the strength of its bright colours alone.
Conservation
Leporinus bleheri is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, reflecting how little population, range and threat data exists for this single-river-system species relative to more widely studied Amazonian fishes. Its documented range is confined to the Iténez-Guaporé basin, and no specific threats have been reported against the species; the fish appears to remain locally common at its type locality, but that observation falls well short of a formal population assessment.
As with many narrow-range Data Deficient characins, the practical conservation takeaway is that more field survey work is needed before its status can be confidently upgraded or downgraded, and the aquarium trade's reliance on wild-collected versus captive-bred stock for this species is not well documented either.
