Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus britskii was formally described in 2011 by Feitosa, Santos and Birindelli, placing it in the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes. The genus Leporinus is one of the largest in the family, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for which of its many nominal species remain valid; Anostomidae as a whole has seen substantial taxonomic revision in recent decades, so species-level identifications in older literature should be treated cautiously.
The species epithet honours Heraldo Antonio Britski, a Brazilian ichthyologist at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP) whose decades of work on Neotropical freshwater fishes, including many Anostomidae, are widely cited in the family's taxonomy. Leporinus britskii is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters including four teeth on the dentary, twelve circumpeduncular scale rows, and 37–39 lateral line scales, alongside its distinctive colour pattern (see Morphology).
Morphology
Leporinus britskii has the elongated, torpedo-like body typical of the genus, built for holding position and grazing along current-swept rocks and wood rather than for open-water cruising. Published data give a maximum size of about 4 in standard length, making it one of the smaller members of a genus that includes species reaching well over 12 in.
The species carries a dark longitudinal stripe running along the midline of the body, crossed by dark transversal bars on the dorsum — a striped-and-barred pattern shared, in variation, with several other small Leporinus. This combination of markings, together with its meristic counts, is part of what separates it from superficially similar congeners in the same drainages.
Habitat
The species is known from the rio Teles Pires and rio Jamanxim, both part of the rio Tapajós basin, and from the rio Jari — clearwater tributaries of the lower Brazilian Amazon. These are warm tropical waters, broadly in the range of 79–86 °F, and Leporinus species in this region typically inhabit blackwater-to-clearwater streams and tributaries rather than turbid whitewater rivers.
Water chemistry across these drainages tends toward soft and acidic-to-neutral, roughly pH 5.5–7.0 with low hardness, consistent with the clearwater Tapajós and Jari systems generally. Structure — submerged wood, rocky substrate and marginal vegetation — matters as much as chemistry, since these are grazing fish that work algae and biofilm off hard surfaces.
Feeding
Leporinus britskii is a benthic grazer, or aufwuchs feeder, in the mould of its genus: FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.4, consistent with an omnivorous diet weighted toward plant and algal material. Like other Leporinus, it likely grazes rocks and submerged wood in the characteristic head-down posture that gives headstanders their name, picking at algae, biofilm and small invertebrates along the way.
In the aquarium, genus-typical care calls for a diet built around vegetable foods — algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina-based flake or pellet — supplemented with a modest amount of protein such as small invertebrates or quality pellet food. Leporinus are best not fed a high-protein diet long-term; excess soft-plant material in the tank should also be expected to draw their attention, a trait documented across the genus.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Leporinus britskii has not been documented. FishBase notes only that the species breeds in distinct pairs in densely grown, weedy places, which points to a pair forming ahead of spawning rather than group spawning, but no further detail on courtship displays, triggers or sexing is available in the sources consulted. Data are sparse here, and this account does not extend beyond what has actually been recorded.
Breeding
What is documented points to Leporinus britskii being an egg-scatterer: FishBase describes distinct pairs breeding in densely grown weedy places, a pattern consistent with the genus generally, where eggs are scattered rather than deposited in a guarded nest and no parental care is reported. Leporinus species as a whole are rarely bred in home aquaria — some, such as L. fasciatus, are essentially never reported spawning in captivity, though a handful of Leporinus and related Anostomidae have been farmed commercially or bred incidentally.
No aquarium or hatchery spawning reports specific to L. britskii were found in the sources reviewed. Prospective breeders should treat this as an unbred or very rarely bred species in the hobby rather than assume standard egg-scattering methods used for other characins will reliably succeed.
In the aquarium
At a modest maximum of around 4 in, Leporinus britskii is more manageable than many of its larger, more notorious relatives, but it still carries the genus's behavioural baggage: Leporinus as a group can be nippy and territorial, and several larger species are well-documented fin-nippers, so this fish is best not assumed docile by default. A tank with open swimming space along the bottom and mid-water, plenty of driftwood and rock for grazing surfaces, and robust or unpalatable plants is a sensible starting point, since soft, tender plants are a realistic target for a grazing Leporinus.
Water should be kept warm, in the region of 79–86 °F reflecting its native Tapajós/Jari range, and soft to neutral, mildly acidic to neutral in pH. As with the genus generally, keepers should watch group dynamics closely and be prepared to separate individuals that turn persistently aggressive toward tankmates or each other. This is not a species with an established aquarium track record, so care recommendations here are extrapolated cautiously from genus-level knowledge rather than species-specific accounts.
Conservation
Leporinus britskii has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a small, recently described species (2011) known only from a limited set of clearwater tributaries in the Tapajós and Jari drainages of the Brazilian Amazon — many such range-restricted characins have simply not yet been through a formal assessment.
No species-specific threat information was found in the sources consulted. In general terms, Amazonian clearwater tributary systems in this region face pressures from deforestation-linked sedimentation, mining activity and hydropower development, all of which are relevant long-term watch items for narrow-range species in the Tapajós basin, though none of this has been documented specifically for L. britskii.
