This is a fish for a large, mature aquarium, not a community nano tank. At up to roughly 8 in, Leporinus falcipinnis needs real swimming room — hobby guidance for the genus generally calls for a minimum of around 47 in in tank length, and more as the fish matures. A tight-fitting, secure lid is essential: headstanders are strong, easily startled jumpers.
The same trait that makes headstanders interesting — sharp, grazing-adapted teeth and a bold, active temperament — is also the trade-off. As Leporinus mature they become increasingly territorial and are well known as fin-nippers, making them a poor match for long-finned or slow-moving tankmates such as bettas or angelfish. Keep this species either in a suitably robust community of fast, similarly sized fish, or singly; do not assume a young, peaceable-looking specimen will stay that way. Because it grazes and browses on soft plants, expect some plant damage in a planted setup, and provide driftwood and rockwork to give it natural grazing surfaces. Water should replicate its soft, acidic black-water origin as closely as practical.
