Leporinus granti is a Guianan headstander named for the diver-red flush that spreads across its silver flanks with age, giving it the trade name "strawberry Leporinus." Like other members of its genus, it spends much of its time grazing at an oblique, head-down angle over sandy and muddy creek bottoms, working algae and biofilm off submerged wood and stone. It is not the tame community fish its bright colour might suggest: Leporinus granti grows to a real 10 in and is notorious in the trade for fin- and scale-nipping, and it turns territorial and aggressive toward its own kind and similar-looking tankmates as it matures. Taxonomy & naming

Leporinus granti was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and sits in the large genus Leporinus, whose name comes from the Latin lepus ("hare") plus the suffix -inus ("resembling"), a reference to the incisor-like, hare-style front teeth shared across the genus. Leporinus granti has the elongated, torpedo-shaped body typical of the genus, with a pointed snout, small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth set with the incisor-like teeth that give Leporinus its name, and a forked tail. FishBase records a maximum size of 10 in total length in females, with males running smaller at around 8 in TL — a genuinely mid-sized characin, not a nano fish, and considerably larger than its juvenile trade size suggests.

Colouration is the species' main draw in the aquarium trade: young fish are silvery with muted markings, and as they mature a reddish-pink to strawberry-red flush spreads across the flanks and fins, set off against a silver-to-olive body. The intensity of the red varies between individuals and with condition.

Habitat

Leporinus granti is native to the Mana River basin in the Guianas region of South America, recorded from Guyana. Within that system it is found around creek entrances with sandy or muddy bottoms and variable current, habitat consistent with a fish that grazes on algae- and biofilm-covered surfaces rather than hunting in open water. Juveniles favour calmer, shallow water near the margins before moving into more current-exposed habitat as adults.

Leporinus granti needs to be sized for its real adult length of up to 10 in, not its small juvenile trade size — aquarium sources recommend a minimum of roughly 75–90 US gallons (75–90 US gal) for an established specimen, with room to upgrade further as it grows. It is a turbulent, active fish in captivity and is widely reported in the trade as prone to fin-nipping and scale-eating, particularly toward slower-moving or similarly shaped tankmates, and it becomes aggressive toward conspecifics and closely related species as it matures.

Because of this temperament, it is best kept either as a solitary specimen among robust, similarly sized fish that can hold their own, or in a large enough group and tank that aggression is diffused rather than concentrated on one target — small numbers in a modest tank tend to go badly. Provide strong water movement, open swimming space and plenty of cover (driftwood, rockwork), and expect it to graze on and shred soft-leaved live plants. It is not a fish for a peaceful community of small, slow or long-finned tankmates.

Conservation
