Leporinus guttatus was described by José Birindelli and Heraldo Britski in 2009, part of a wave of Leporinus and Anostomidae revisions that followed increased collecting effort in the tributaries of the rio Xingu. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a family named for the oblique, nose-down feeding posture many of its members adopt. The genus Leporinus is one of the largest in the family and remains taxonomically active, with species boundaries still being clarified through ongoing revision; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference for its currently accepted species and synonymies.
The holotype (MZUSP 97100, 4 in SL) and paratypes were collected from the rio Curuá, part of the rio Xingu basin on the Serra do Cachimbo plateau in Pará state, Brazil — the same restricted drainage that defines the species' entire known range. The specific epithet guttatus is Latin for "spotted" or "dappled", referring to the dark blotches scattered across the body that distinguish it from other Leporinus in the same river system.
Morphology
Leporinus guttatus reaches a maximum recorded size of about 5 in standard length, making it a comparatively large species for the genus — most of its close relatives top out a little smaller. It has the elongated, moderately compressed body typical of Leporinus, a small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth adapted for grazing, and the dark blotched pattern along the flanks that gives the species its name.
As in other headstanders, the body plan is built around browsing rather than pursuit: a streamlined shape that lets the fish hold position at an angle in current while it works algae and biofilm off rock and wood surfaces.
