Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus klausewitzi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1960 and placed in the genus Leporinus, part of the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises the combination as valid, and the species has not been swept up in the taxonomic revisions that have restructured other parts of Anostomidae in recent decades.
The genus name Leporinus derives from the Latin lepus, "hare," a reference to the two large, forward-projecting incisor-like teeth in the upper jaw that give these fish a faintly rabbit-toothed look. The species epithet honours Dr Wolfgang Klausewitz (1922–2018), a German ichthyologist associated with the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt. In the trade the fish is most often sold simply as the clown or spotted headstander, a name it shares loosely with other boldly blotched Leporinus and with the more distantly related Chilodus punctatus, the true spotted headstander, which is a smaller, gentler nano-grazer and should not be confused with this species.
Morphology
Leporinus klausewitzi has the elongated, torpedo-shaped body typical of the genus, with a pointed snout, a terminal mouth armed with the characteristic incisor-like teeth, and a series of large, dark, rounded blotches running along a pale to golden flank — a pattern that gives rise to the "clown" name. FishBase and hobby sources place the maximum size at around 6 in, a modest size for a Leporinus but still a fish that needs real swimming room as an adult.
As in most headstanders, the fins are unremarkable in colour compared with the body pattern, and the blotched markings can fade or intensify somewhat with mood, age and water conditions. No reliable external difference between the sexes has been documented for this species.
Habitat
The species is native to the central Amazon River basin, where it occurs in the region's characteristic mix of river channels, flooded forest and blackwater and clearwater tributaries. Like other Amazonian headstanders it is associated with structure — submerged wood, roots and leaf litter — over which it grazes in its distinctive oblique, nose-down posture, picking algae and biofilm from surfaces rather than actively hunting.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to this species is sparse, but its Amazonian origin points to warm, generally soft and mildly acidic conditions consistent with the wider basin. Aquarium care guides recommend a temperature of roughly 75–82 °F and a pH around 6.2–7.2, figures consistent with typical Amazonian blackwater-to-clearwater habitat rather than extreme blackwater.
Feeding
Leporinus klausewitzi is primarily a grazer and algae-eater, with a trophic level cited by FishBase (2.4) consistent with a herbivorous-to-detritivorous diet. In the wild it rasps algae and biofilm from submerged wood and other surfaces while holding its head-down posture, supplementing this with small invertebrates and other soft, easily grazed material.
In the aquarium the species is reported as omnivorous and will readily accept prepared and frozen foods alongside vegetable matter. A diet weighted toward algae wafers, blanched vegetables and vegetable-based flake or pellet, topped up with occasional protein such as bloodworm or brine shrimp, mirrors its natural grazing habit. Because it is a committed grazer, it will also browse soft-leaved aquarium plants, which keepers should plan around rather than be surprised by.
Mating
FishBase describes the species' reproductive habit as forming distinct, monogamous pairs that breed in densely vegetated, weedy areas — a pattern consistent with the egg-scattering habit typical of Leporinus and other headstanders generally. Beyond that pairing behaviour, detailed courtship observations for this species are not well documented in the available literature.
No external sexual dimorphism has been reliably described for Leporinus klausewitzi; sexes are not readily distinguished by colour or body shape from the sources available.
Breeding
Leporinus klausewitzi is an egg-scattering species, breeding in pairs among dense vegetation, and it is rarely bred in the home aquarium. FishBase records no parental care associated with spawning — the pair releases and fertilises eggs over weedy substrate and provides no subsequent guarding of eggs or fry, consistent with the broader pattern seen across most Leporinus and Anostomus species, a handful of which have been reported spawning in aquaria and some of which are farmed commercially, but which are not routine home-breeding projects.
Given the lack of detailed spawning accounts specific to this species, keepers should not expect to replicate breeding conditions reliably; it is kept in the hobby almost exclusively as a wild-collected or farmed grow-out fish rather than a captive-bred one.
In the aquarium
Leporinus klausewitzi is an active, attractive grazer, but its reputation in the trade is that of a fin-nipper that needs fast-moving, similarly sized or larger tankmates rather than small, slow or long-finned companions. A tank of at least 55 US gal with a fast, mature filter and strong water quality suits an adult fish best; hobby sources flag that this species is sensitive to poor water quality and want ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrate kept low.
Because it grazes readily on soft vegetation, keepers who want a heavily planted tank should choose tough, unpalatable species (Anubias, Java fern, Vallisneria) or expect some browsing damage to softer plants. Driftwood and leaf litter give it natural grazing surfaces and cover, and as with other Leporinus its nipping tendency and territoriality tend to increase with age and size, so it is best not mixed with delicate or slow tankmates.
Conservation
Leporinus klausewitzi is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across the central Amazon River basin and the absence of documented major threats to the species. FishBase similarly rates it as having high resilience and low vulnerability to fishing pressure.
As with many Amazonian species, the general long-term pressures on the basin — deforestation, damming and water-quality change — are relevant background factors even though the species itself is not currently considered threatened.
