Leporinus melanopleura was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Leporinus, one of the largest genera in the family, whose members are unified by an elongate, torpedo-shaped body and the distinctive oblique, head-down grazing posture that gives the family its common name.
