Leporinus muyscorum is a Colombian headstander endemic to the Magdalena and Atrato river basins, where it grazes obliquely, head angled down toward the substrate, picking algae, detritus and plant matter from rocks and wood. It grows into a substantial fish — FishBase records a maximum of 17.5 in standard length — far larger than the small nano-grazers sold as "headstanders" elsewhere in the trade, and like many of its Leporinus relatives it can turn nippy and territorial as it matures. Locally known as liseta, it has historically supported an artisanal fishery in its native rivers, but catch rates have collapsed under sustained overfishing, and the IUCN now lists it as Vulnerable. Leporinus muyscorum was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1900. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a family named for the oblique, head-down posture many of its members adopt while grazing. GBIF records the species under the combination Megaleporinus muyscorum, reflecting the broader taxonomic split of Leporinus into several genera (including Megaleporinus) in recent decades; this article follows the traditional and still widely used combination Leporinus muyscorum, consistent with the species' long-standing treatment in the regional Colombian ichthyological literature.

The species epithet muyscorum references the Muysca (Muisca), the Indigenous people of the Colombian highlands, reflecting the species' endemism to Colombian river systems. Locally it is known as liseta, a common name applied to it in Magdalena and Atrato basin fisheries.

Morphology

Leporinus muyscorum shows the classic anostomid body plan: an elongated, moderately compressed body, a small terminal-to-slightly-inferior mouth set for grazing, and the characteristic oblique swimming posture that gives headstanders their name. FishBase records a maximum published length of 17.5 in standard length, which places this species well above the small headstanders more commonly seen in home aquaria — it is a genuinely large characin at full size, not a nano fish.

As with many Leporinus, expect a patterned body — typically silvery to olive with darker bars or blotches along the flanks in life, fading or shifting with age and mood, though the cache used for this article does not document a detailed colour description specific to this species. Feeding

Breeding

Leporinus muyscorum is a large fish for the home aquarium — a maximum recorded length of 17.5 in standard length means an adult easily exceeds the space many keepers budget for a headstander, and a tank sized for a small nano-grazer will not hold this species through adulthood. Prospective keepers should plan for a large, long aquarium with robust filtration and secure decor, and should expect the fish to graze on and likely damage soft-leaved plants, in keeping with its herbivore-leaning diet.

As with many Leporinus and Anostomus relatives, this species can become territorial and nippy with age, and its size means any fin-nipping or aggression is delivered by a substantial fish, not a token nip from a small one. It is best suited to larger community setups with similarly robust tankmates rather than delicate or slow-moving fish, and given the lack of captive breeding, any specimen in the trade is very likely wild-caught from an already-pressured population — a consideration worth weighing before purchase.

Conservation

Leporinus muyscorum is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable (2016 assessment by Villa-Navarro, Mesa-Salazar, Sanchez-Duarte and Usma). The primary documented threat is intense overfishing: catch rates in the Atrato River are reported to have declined by 90 percent over eight years, a collapse steep enough to signal serious, ongoing pressure on the species' already narrow endemic range.

Because Leporinus muyscorum is restricted entirely to the Magdalena and Atrato basins in Colombia, it has no buffer of a wider distribution to fall back on the way many other Neotropical characins do — the fishery pressure driving its Vulnerable listing is concentrated on the only rivers where the species exists. Given that captive breeding is not established, any conservation-minded response rests on managing wild harvest and habitat in those two river systems rather than on aquaculture reducing collection pressure.
