Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus niceforoi was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1943. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Leporinus — one of the largest genera in that family, with the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognising dozens of valid species distributed across the river systems of tropical South America.
The genus name Leporinus derives from the Latin lepus, "rabbit" or "hare," a reference to the two prominent, rabbit-like incisor teeth in the upper jaw shared across the genus. Beyond the original description, published locality and a handful of aggregator database entries, little has been formally published specifically on L. niceforoi; it is a poorly studied, range-restricted species rather than one of the well-documented aquarium staples of the genus such as L. fasciatus.
Morphology
Leporinus niceforoi is a small member of its genus: FishBase records a maximum published standard length of 5 in, well under the 8–12 in or more reached by several popular aquarium Leporinus.
