Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus nijsseni was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist José Cesar Garavello in 1990, and it belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes. Anostomidae takes its common name from the characteristic oblique, nose-down feeding posture shared by Leporinus, Anostomus and their relatives, a distinct lineage from the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars of the neighbouring family Serrasalmidae, though both families sit within the broader characin radiation of South America.
The genus Leporinus is large and taxonomically active, and species-level identification within it is often difficult without careful comparison of spotting pattern, body depth and fin colour, so hobby records for L. nijsseni should be treated with some caution where they are not confirmed against a description or reliable reference. The species epithet honours the Dutch ichthyologist Han Nijssen, who worked extensively on the freshwater fishes of Suriname and the Guianas.
Morphology
Leporinus nijsseni has the elongated, slightly laterally compressed body typical of the genus, built for steady cruising and grazing rather than burst speed. Its base colour is a yellowish gold, over which sit three to four large, well-defined black blotches spaced along the flank, accompanied by numerous smaller dark spots that give the fish its "spotted" trade name and make it easy to distinguish from plainer-bodied Leporinus species at a glance.
FishBase gives a maximum published length of 6.5 in, and hobby sources report adults reaching around 7 in — a real mid-sized characin, not a small or nano fish, and one that needs a tank sized accordingly (see "In the aquarium"). As in most Leporinus, the small, subterminal mouth and specialised dentition are adapted for scraping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces rather than for seizing prey.
Habitat
Leporinus nijsseni is native to Suriname, where it is recorded from the Saramacca Creek and Suriname River drainages in the northern lowlands of the country. Like other Guiana Shield river fish, it lives in freshwater, benthopelagic habitat in a tropical climate, moving through the water column and along the bottom over rock, wood and vegetated margins where algae and biofilm accumulate for it to graze.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to this species is sparse in the sources available; as a Guiana Shield river characin it can be expected to encounter the generally soft, mildly acidic conditions typical of Suriname's blackwater and clearwater systems, but keepers should not assume extreme blackwater parameters without better confirmation, and this article does not state numbers beyond what is documented.
Feeding
Leporinus nijsseni is an omnivorous grazer with a trophic level around 2.5, consistent with a diet weighted toward algae, biofilm and plant material with some incidental animal matter. In the wild it forages in the characteristic oblique, head-down posture shared by headstanders, working over submerged wood and stone rather than chasing prey in open water.
In the aquarium it takes readily to vegetable-forward foods — blanched spinach, courgette, cucumber and spirulina-based flakes or pellets — alongside good-quality omnivore or herbivore pellets, with occasional live or frozen foods offered as a supplement rather than a staple. Because it is a determined grazer, soft-leaved aquarium plants are at real risk of being eaten or shredded; keepers wanting a heavily planted tank should choose tough, unpalatable species.
Mating
No specific courtship description for Leporinus nijsseni is available in the sources consulted. Across the genus, headstanders generally pair or gather loosely around spawning without the elaborate courtship display seen in some other characins, and external sexual dimorphism is not well documented for this species — no reliable colour or shape difference between the sexes has been recorded in the sources available, so this article does not assert one.
Breeding
Leporinus nijsseni is presumed to follow the pattern documented for its genus: an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, rather than a nest-builder, mouthbrooder or bubble-nest species. Breeding is rarely reported in the home aquarium for Leporinus generally — a handful of species have been spawned by dedicated hobbyists, and some Leporinus are produced commercially at farm scale, but L. nijsseni specifically is not documented as an aquarium-bred fish in the sources available.
Given that gap, this article does not invent spawning details, tank setup or fry-rearing specifics for this species; a prospective breeder should expect to be working largely without a documented aquarium precedent.
In the aquarium
Leporinus nijsseni is an active, highly mobile fish that needs real swimming room: hobby care guides recommend a minimum of roughly 75–90 US gal, ideally 90 US gal or more, for an adult reaching 6.5–7 in. It is described as gregarious and generally placid for its genus, and can be kept either singly or in a small group of six to eight in a sufficiently spacious tank — a group in a cramped tank is more likely to produce squabbling than the calmer, settled behaviour a real group affords.
As with Leporinus and Anostomus generally, keepers should go in with realistic expectations: many species in this genus are known fin-nippers and can become territorial with age, and this species' size and activity level make it unsuitable for small or delicate community tanks. Décor should include robust driftwood and stone for grazing surfaces, since it will pick at algae and biofilm constantly, and any live plants should be tough, fast-growing or otherwise expendable, since soft-leaved species are likely to be eaten. Diet should stay vegetable-forward (see "Feeding") to keep the fish healthy long-term.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Leporinus nijsseni as Least Concern, and FishBase likewise reports the species as having high resilience with a population doubling time of under fifteen months, indicating a fish that is not currently a conservation priority. Its range within Suriname's Saramacca Creek and Suriname River drainages is not reported as under acute pressure in the sources consulted, though, as with other Guiana Shield freshwater fish, the general long-term watch items for the region are habitat change linked to mining, deforestation and water-quality impacts rather than any species-specific threat documented here.
