Leporinus parae is a mid-sized headstander from the Pará and lower Amazon river basins of Brazil, built with the long, torpedo-shaped body and small terminal-to-subterminal mouth typical of its genus. Like most Leporinus it grazes algae and biofilm off submerged wood and stone in a distinctive oblique, head-down posture, and it reaches a real adult size — close to 9 in — that many buyers underestimate from a small juvenile in a shop tank. Leporinus and their close relatives the Anostomus headstanders have a well-earned reputation as nippy, territorial fish that can shred fins and soft-leaved plants as they mature; this account keeps that honestly in view alongside the fish's genuine appeal as an active, striking grazer for the right tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Leporinus parae was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a family named for the oblique, nose-down feeding posture many of its members adopt while grazing. The genus Leporinus is one of the largest in the family, with dozens of described species distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco and other South American river systems, most sharing an elongated body, dark bars or blotches on a silvery ground colour, and small, dentition adapted for scraping rather than seizing prey.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination; Leporinus parae is currently recognised under its original genus placement, with no reclassification noted for this species. As with many Leporinus, field identification from close congeners rests on fine details of banding pattern and fin colouration, and the species is not commonly separated out by common name in the aquarium trade, where it is more often sold simply as a "leporinus" or headstander alongside similar-looking relatives.

Morphology

Leporinus parae has the classic Leporinus silhouette: an elongated, only moderately compressed body, a small head with a small, slightly subterminal mouth suited to scraping algae and biofilm rather than grabbing prey, and a forked tail. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 9 in for the species — a real, aquarium-relevant adult size that is considerably larger than the 2–3 in juveniles typically sold in the trade.

Colouration follows the familiar Leporinus pattern of a pale to silvery-yellow ground colour broken by dark vertical or diagonal bars or blotches along the flanks, though exact patterning and its persistence with age vary between Leporinus species and is not fully documented for this one in the sources consulted. Habitat

Mating

FishBase describes Leporinus parae as forming distinct pairs that breed in densely vegetated, weedy places, consistent with the pairing behaviour documented across the genus. No further detail on courtship display or external sexual dimorphism was found in the sources consulted for this species specifically.

Related Leporinus and Anostomus headstanders are reported in hobby literature to spawn in the wild during the flooded-forest season, roughly December to May, when rising water opens up dense vegetation as spawning habitat — behaviour broadly consistent with the paired, weed-associated spawning FishBase records for L. parae.

Breeding

At a documented maximum of 9 in SL, Leporinus parae needs a genuinely large tank as an adult — a small juvenile in a shop tank gives no sense of the active, fast-swimming fish it becomes. As with other Leporinus, keepers should expect a fish that can be aggressive and territorial toward its own species and can nip the fins of slower tankmates as it matures; keeping it in a group of six or more is reported to reduce (though not eliminate) intraspecific aggression in related species, while a lone specimen in a mixed community carries real fin-nipping risk.

Because it is primarily a grazer, Leporinus parae will also test soft-leaved and delicate aquarium plants, and keepers who want a heavily planted tank should choose tough, unpalatable species or expect some grazing damage. Provide driftwood and rockwork for it to graze over, strong filtration and swimming space to match its active habit, and a vegetable-rich diet as described above. As with all Leporinus, buy for the 20+ cm adult, not the juvenile.

Leporinus parae is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, last evaluated in 2020.
