Leporinus parae was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a family named for the oblique, nose-down feeding posture many of its members adopt while grazing. The genus Leporinus is one of the largest in the family, with dozens of described species distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco and other South American river systems, most sharing an elongated body, dark bars or blotches on a silvery ground colour, and small, dentition adapted for scraping rather than seizing prey.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination; Leporinus parae is currently recognised under its original genus placement, with no reclassification noted for this species. Leporinus parae has the classic Leporinus silhouette: an elongated, only moderately compressed body, a small head with a small, slightly subterminal mouth suited to scraping algae and biofilm rather than grabbing prey, and a forked tail. As with other Leporinus, keepers should expect a fish that can be aggressive and territorial toward its own species and can nip the fins of slower tankmates as it matures; keeping it in a group of six or more is reported to reduce (though not eliminate) intraspecific aggression in related species, while a lone specimen in a mixed community carries real fin-nipping risk.
Because it is primarily a grazer, Leporinus parae will also test soft-leaved and delicate aquarium plants, and keepers who want a heavily planted tank should choose tough, unpalatable species or expect some grazing damage. Provide driftwood and rockwork for it to graze over, strong filtration and swimming space to match its active habit, and a vegetable-rich diet as described above. As with all Leporinus, buy for the 20+ cm adult, not the juvenile.
