Leporinus pearsoni was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1940, with a type locality in the Chimoré River, a tributary in the Cochabamba department of Bolivia that drains into the upper Amazon system. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, and to the large genus Leporinus, whose valid membership and internal groupings are governed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences).
Taxonomic literature on the barred Leporinus places L. pearsoni within the L. fasciatus species complex, a group of superficially similar, dark-vertical-barred headstanders distinguished from one another largely by fin-ray counts, bar number and proportions rather than by obvious external field marks; a redescription of the group confirms nine branched pelvic-fin rays as one of the characters used to separate its members.
