Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus platycephalus was described by the German aquarist and ichthyologist Heinrich Meinken in 1935, with type material collected at Corrientes on the Río Paraná in Argentina. Type-specimen inventories of Characiformes held at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (Zarske, 2012) confirm it as a valid species with type material from that locality, and the Catalog of Fishes continues to recognise it as a distinct species within Leporinus.
The species belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are named for their habit of feeding at a steep, head-down angle. Leporinus is one of the largest genera in the family, and several of its species are difficult to tell apart without careful comparison of body proportions and banding pattern; L. platycephalus's epithet platycephalus ("flat-headed", from Greek platys, "broad/flat", and kephale, "head") points to a comparatively broad, depressed head profile as a distinguishing feature within the genus. As with many Leporinus, museum and hobby records for this species are sparse relative to more widely traded congeners such as L. fasciatus.
Morphology
No aquarium-trade or FishBase maximum-length figure could be confirmed for Leporinus platycephalus specifically; the cached sources describe it only in relation to better-documented congeners, noting that the genus spans a wide size range — from smaller species such as L. maculatus at roughly 7–8 in to larger species such as L. fasciatus at up to roughly 14.5 in. This is a notably different setting from many of its Amazonian congeners: the Paraná system experiences a cooler, more seasonal subtropical climate, and fish native to it — including this species — should be expected to tolerate, and in a home aquarium be kept at, cooler water than typical Amazonian Leporinus.

Feeding
Leporinus, as a genus, are grazing omnivores: in the wild they feed head-down at an oblique angle, rasping algae, biofilm and aufwuchs from submerged wood and rock, and supplementing that with fallen fruit, seeds and small invertebrates. No feeding study specific to L. platycephalus was found, but there is no reason to expect this species departs from the genus pattern, and its broad, flattened head is consistent with a grazing rather than an ambush-predator lifestyle.

Strong water movement and good oxygenation, reflecting its riverine origin, are advisable.
As with other headstanders, this species should be expected to be territorial and prone to nipping tankmates' fins as it matures, a trait widely reported across Leporinus and Anostomus. Keeping a group can help diffuse aggression toward tankmates by spreading it within the group, though this can also mean the fish direct more aggression at each other; some keepers instead isolate a single specimen with larger, robust tankmates that cannot be intimidated or nipped. Its grazing habit also means it will likely browse on soft aquatic plants, so aquascapes with delicate vegetation should be approached with caution. Given its cooler-running Paraná origin, keepers should also avoid assuming it needs the warmer end of typical Amazonian-Leporinus temperature advice without further confirmation.
