Leporinus santosi was formally described in 2013 by Heraldo A. Britski and José L. O. Birindelli, part of a wave of taxonomic work that has clarified species boundaries within the large and historically confused genus Leporinus. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are recognisable by their oblique, snout-down foraging posture and, in many genera, a body marked with dark blotches or bars.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the genus, and Leporinus itself remains one of the larger and more taxonomically active genera in Anostomidae, with species distinguished on fine details of colour pattern, scale counts and body proportions that have led to repeated splitting and description of new, geographically restricted species like this one. Leporinus santosi is known from the lower rio Tocantins in Pará State, Brazil, and the species epithet honours a collector or researcher associated with the type material, in keeping with the genus's long tradition of eponymous species names.
Morphology
Leporinus santosi is a modestly sized headstander, reaching a documented maximum of about 5.5 in standard length — small by the standards of the genus, many of which exceed 8–12 in. Like other Leporinus, it has an elongate, moderately compressed body, a small terminal-to-subterminal mouth suited to grazing rather than grasping prey, and the characteristic body pattern shared across much of the genus: FishBase records three dark midlateral blotches along the flank accompanied by small dark spots, a pattern used alongside fin and scale counts to separate it from closely related congeners.

Based on the well-documented behaviour of related Leporinus and Anostomus species, a keeper taking on this or any similar headstander should plan for a nippy, territorial fish as it matures, provide a diet weighted toward vegetable matter and algae, and expect it to graze on soft aquarium plants. Given how little is published about this specific species, anyone keeping it should treat husbandry as exploratory and prioritise close observation over relying on generic care sheets.
