Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus spilopleura was described by the British ichthyologist John Roxborough Norman in 1926, placing it in the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes. The genus Leporinus is one of the largest in the family, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the governing authority for which of its many nominal species are currently valid, since the genus has a long history of taxonomic revision and species once lumped together have periodically been split apart.
The species epithet spilopleura is built from Greek roots referring to the spotted flank pattern that gives the fish its common name, threespot leporinus. As with much of the genus, field identification against close relatives can be difficult, and the type locality — the Oyapock River, on the boundary between French Guiana and Suriname — anchors the name to a comparatively narrow, well-defined part of the wider Leporinus range across northern South America.
Morphology
Leporinus spilopleura has the classic headstander build shared across the genus: an elongated, moderately deep-bodied, almost torpedo-shaped fish with a small, terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth well suited to grazing rather than grasping prey. FishBase records a maximum length of 10.5 in, a solidly mid-sized fish by aquarium standards and considerably larger than many of the small tetras it is sometimes sold alongside.
The common name references a pattern of dark blotches along the flank — a trait typical of Leporinus, many of which display bold, high-contrast banding or spotting over a silvery-to-golden body. As in other Leporinus, the fins are unremarkable in shape but the overall silhouette, with its slightly upturned profile and downward-angled feeding posture, is distinctive at a glance once the fish is seen grazing.
Habitat
The species is known from the Oyapock River basin, on the French Guiana/Suriname border in northern South America, where it occupies flowing freshwater habitat as a benthopelagic fish — spending its time near the bottom and in midwater rather than at the surface. Data on its full range and habitat preferences beyond the type locality are sparse; the wider genus Leporinus is generally associated with clear-to-moderately-stained, flowing rivers and streams across the Amazon, Orinoco and Guianas, often near submerged wood, rock and marginal vegetation that supports the algae and biofilm the fish grazes.
Temperature and water-chemistry data specific to this species were not found in available sources. Based on its Guianas range and the genus's general preference for warm, soft-to-neutral, mildly acidic river water, keepers should expect similar parameters, but this should be treated as an inference from the genus rather than a documented fact for L. spilopleura itself.
Feeding
Leporinus spilopleura is a grazer, feeding in the characteristic oblique, head-down posture that gives headstanders their name — tipping forward to pick algae, biofilm and small invertebrates from wood, rock and other submerged surfaces. This matches the broader diet pattern documented across the genus: predominantly vegetable matter and algae supplemented with small invertebrates, an omnivorous-but-herbivore-leaning diet rather than a predatory one.
In the aquarium, this means a diet built around vegetable-based foods — algae wafers, blanched vegetables and spirulina-based flake or pellet — with occasional protein such as bloodworm or brine shrimp. Because grazing Leporinus will also pick at soft-leaved plants when the mood strikes, keepers should expect some plant damage and plan tank furnishing accordingly.
Mating
No species-specific courtship behaviour for Leporinus spilopleura was found in available sources. Across the genus, pairing and spawning behaviour in Leporinus and its close relative Anostomus is not well documented in the aquarium literature, and successful captive breeding is uncommon enough that detailed courtship accounts are rare even at the genus level.

Breeding
Leporinus spilopleura is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, consistent with the genus as a whole, but it is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria. A handful of Leporinus and Anostomus species have been reported to spawn in captivity, and some Leporinus are farmed commercially in South America, but detailed accounts of eggs, hatching times or fry-rearing specific to this species were not found.
No parental care is expected under the egg-scattering mode typical of the genus. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species reliably at home; it should be regarded, on current evidence, as essentially unbred in the hobby.
In the aquarium
Leporinus spilopleura needs to be sized for its real adult length of roughly 10.5 in, not for the smaller juvenile commonly sold in shops — a spacious, long aquarium with strong water flow and open swimming room to mimic its native river habitat is appropriate, not a small community tank. Juveniles are generally the calmer stage; as with many Leporinus, adults can become territorial and are documented fin-nippers, a trait to weigh carefully against small or long-finned tankmates.
Because the species grazes on algae, biofilm and soft plant matter, keepers should expect it to sample tender aquarium plants and should furnish accordingly with hardier, tougher-leaved species or accept some plant damage. Given its nipping tendency and territorial adult behaviour, it is best suited to larger community setups with robust, similarly sized tankmates rather than a delicate mixed-species aquascape.
Conservation
Leporinus spilopleura is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN Red List, meaning there is not enough information on its population size, trend or the extent of any threats to assign a status of concern or Least Concern. This is a common situation for narrow-range or lesser-studied South American characins, and it reflects a genuine gap in the data rather than evidence that the species is secure.

As with many Data Deficient freshwater fish, broader regional concerns for Guianas river systems — habitat change, mining-related sedimentation and water-quality pressure — are plausible long-term watch items, but no source-backed claim can be made that they specifically affect this species at present.
