Leporinus striatus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a family whose members are recognisable by their oblique, head-down grazing posture and, in many species, bold longitudinal or bar-like body markings. The genus Leporinus is one of the largest in the family, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the governing authority for which of its many nominal species are currently regarded as valid, since the genus has a long history of taxonomic revision and species-level confusion in both the scientific and aquarium literature.
The common names "striped headstander" and "striped leporinus" both describe the same diagnostic feature: dark, roughly horizontal stripes running along a silvery-to-brassy flank. Because several Leporinus species share a broadly similar striped pattern and body shape, aquarium-trade identification is not always reliable, and specimens sold under this name should be treated with some caution until confirmed against a described reference.
Morphology
Leporinus striatus has the elongated, torpedo-shaped body typical of the genus: a pointed head, a small, low-set, protrusible mouth adapted for grazing rather than grasping prey, and a body built for holding position in current rather than for open-water bursts. The namesake striping runs along the body in dark horizontal bands over a pale silver-to-tan ground colour, though intensity and exact pattern vary somewhat between individuals and with mood.

Because it is a committed grazer, it will strip soft-leaved aquarium plants if not fed enough vegetable matter — keep tough, unpalatable plant species or accept that delicate planting will not survive alongside it. Provide driftwood and rock surfaces to encourage natural grazing behaviour, keep the water warm (roughly 70–81 °F) and softer, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.9–7.2), and maintain strong filtration and good water quality, as with most actively swimming riverine characins.
