Leporinus uatumaensis was formally described by Santos and Jégu in 1996, with the type locality given as the Rio Uatumã at Cachoeira do Miriti, below the falls at Balbina, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family characterised by an angled, oblique mouth adapted to grazing at a head-down tilt.
Subsequent taxonomic work by Birindelli and colleagues (2013) treated Leporinus uatumaensis as a junior synonym of Leporinus moralesi. This account retains the original name Leporinus uatumaensis per the site's editorial convention of following the described binomial rather than pre-emptively adopting a proposed synonymy; readers researching the species further should be aware both names appear in the literature.
