Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus y-ophorus was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1922. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and to the large genus Leporinus, whose valid membership is governed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences). Leporinus is one of the most species-rich anostomid genera, and many of its members — including this species — are identified largely by colour pattern, since body shape is broadly conserved across the group.
The specific epithet y-ophorus is itself descriptive: it references the dark, Y-shaped or lyre-like bar pattern running down the flanks that gives the fish its common trade name, "Y-striped leporinus." As with many Leporinus species, colour pattern can shift somewhat with age, mood and individual variation, and the genus as a whole is taxonomically active, so aquarists should expect occasional revision of species boundaries within it.
Morphology
Leporinus y-ophorus has the characteristic anostomid build: an elongated, moderately compressed body, a small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth set for grazing rather than grabbing, and the bold dark bars along a silvery ground colour that give the species its common name. Aquarium reports cite an adult size in the range of 4–6 in, modest by the standards of some larger Leporinus species but still a fish that needs meaningful swimming room as it matures.
FishBase does not report a confirmed maximum length figure for this species, so the 4–6 in range from aquarium sources should be treated as a working estimate rather than a hard ceiling. The fins are unremarkable in shape, and sexes are not reliably distinguished by external colour or fin differences (see "Mating").
Habitat
The species is native to tropical South America, recorded from the Meta and Orinoco river systems and the Amazon basin. It is described on FishBase as benthopelagic, occupying the water column near the bottom and structure rather than the open mid-water, consistent with its grazing lifestyle along submerged wood, rocks and vegetation.
Detailed water-chemistry data for this species specifically is sparse in the available sources; as a tropical Orinoco/Amazon-basin characin it is reasonable to expect warm, generally soft-to-neutral water typical of the region, but specific pH and temperature ranges are not documented in the cache and should not be over-specified. Aquarists should default to stable, well-oxygenated tropical freshwater conditions and avoid extremes in either direction.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Leporinus y-ophorus a trophic level of 2.4, placing it among the grazers and aufwuchs feeders rather than the predators or omnivores higher in the same family. In the wild it grazes algae and biofilm from submerged surfaces in its characteristic head-down, oblique posture, a feeding style shared across the headstander group and also picking up small invertebrates in the process.
In the aquarium this translates to a need for vegetable-forward foods — algae wafers, blanched vegetables and spirulina-based flakes or pellets — supplemented with some protein such as small live or frozen foods. Like many Leporinus, it will also graze on soft-leaved aquarium plants if not offered enough vegetable matter, so keepers should either feed generously or choose hardy, tougher-leaved plants.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Leporinus y-ophorus is not documented in the available sources. FishBase notes that headstanders of this genus are generally reported to breed as distinct pairs in densely weedy places, suggesting a pair-bonding approach to spawning rather than open-water group spawning, but the fine detail of courtship display for this particular species is data sparse.

Leporinus y-ophorus is a hardy, active fish best suited to a spacious tank with strong water movement and open swimming room balanced against plenty of driftwood and rockwork to graze. Given its adult size of roughly 4–6 in and its energetic, dominance-establishing personality, a tank in the 250-litre-plus range with robust tankmates is a safer target than a small community setup. Aquarium reports describe it as capable of aggression toward smaller fish while establishing a pecking order, and like many of its Leporinus relatives it has a reputation within the genus for fin-nipping, so slow-moving, long-finned tankmates are a poor match.
Because it grazes readily and can shred soft vegetation, keepers wanting a planted tank should choose tough, unpalatable species (Anubias, Java fern, Vallisneria) or accept some grazing damage to softer plants. Offer a vegetable-rich diet to reduce plant grazing and keep the fish's naturally assertive temperament in check by avoiding overcrowding and giving it adequate territory.
Conservation
Leporinus y-ophorus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with an assessment dated 24 April 2014. This reflects its relatively wide distribution across the Meta, Orinoco and Amazon basin systems, spanning a large area of tropical South America without evidence of significant range-wide decline.
