Triportheus orinocensis is a small, deep-bodied characin from the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia, one of roughly a dozen species in the genus Triportheus — the "keeled" or hatchet-flanked characins, named for the sharply angled belly that runs back toward the anal fin. It is a modest fish by the standards of this atlas's broader company: FishBase records a maximum of only 5.5 in standard length, nothing like the metre-plus pacus or the predatory dorado sharing the same rivers. Triportheus orinocensis shoals in shallow water over sand, feeding opportunistically on fruit, seeds and insects that fall into the current, and it remains a poorly documented species in both the scientific literature and the aquarium hobby — this account states plainly where the record runs thin.

Taxonomy & naming

Triportheus orinocensis was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Luiz Malabarba in 2004, with a type locality in the Rio Orinoco basin spanning Venezuela and Colombia — the river system its epithet orinocensis directly names. The genus Triportheus currently sits in the family Triportheidae, a lineage split out from the broader Characidae/Serrasalmidae complex as the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) and recent phylogenetic work have restructured Characiformes; older literature and some aggregator sites may still list Triportheus under Characidae, but the genus placement itself is not in question.

Triportheus is a genus of a little over a dozen species distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraguay-Paraná and Guiana river systems, unified by a distinctive keeled, laterally compressed body and greatly enlarged, wing-like pectoral fins. Triportheus orinocensis is one of the smaller, more range-restricted members of the genus, and it is easily confused with other Orinoco-basin Triportheus in the field; reliable identification rests on the technical morphometrics in Malabarba's original description rather than on any single obvious field mark.

Morphology

Triportheus orinocensis is a small, laterally compressed characin with the deep-keeled body shape typical of its genus: the belly carries a sharp, saw-like edge running from the pelvic region back toward the anal fin, a feature shared with piranhas and pacus but here used for a very different, non-predatory lifestyle. FishBase gives a maximum size of 5.5 in standard length, and describes body depth as proportionally large — depth at the dorsal-fin origin runs 28.7–37.1% of standard length, and depth at the pectoral-fin insertion 32.2–39.3% of standard length, giving the fish a noticeably tall, flattened silhouette relative to its length.

Like other Triportheus, it almost certainly carries enlarged, elongated pectoral fins relative to its body size — a hallmark of the genus that lets these fish make short, skittering leaps at the surface when startled, a behaviour well documented in congeners though not specifically recorded for this species in the cache. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, consistent with a fish that shoals in open water over sand rather than hugging cover. No dedicated colour description or sexual dimorphism data was located for this species.

As with other Triportheus, a tightly fitted lid is worth planning for, since the genus's enlarged pectoral fins are associated with skittering, surface-breaking escape jumps in related species.
