Triportheus pictus was described by the American ichthyologist Samuel Garman in 1890 as Chalcinus pictus, based on material from the Rio Jutaí (Jutahy), a tributary of the Rio Solimões in Amazonas, Brazil, roughly 2°43'S 66°57'W; the holotype is held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ 21261). The species was subsequently placed in Triportheus, the genus of keeled, hatchet-bodied characins now generally referred to the family Triportheidae, though older literature treats it within a broader Characidae.
