Taxonomy & naming
Triportheus venezuelensis was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Luiz Malabarba in 2004, part of a revision of the genus that also described the closely related T. orinocensis from a similar Orinoco-basin locality (caño Falcón, Guárico state, Venezuela). The species epithet venezuelensis simply refers to the country drained by the Río Orinoco, where the type material was collected; the holotype is held at the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS 34768), a specimen of 4.5 in standard length taken in Barinas state, Venezuela.
The genus Triportheus belongs to the family Triportheidae — the keeled or "hatchet" characins — a lineage historically lumped with the Characidae but now recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as its own family on the strength of a shared ventral keel and surface-feeding body plan. Within the wider characin fauna covered here, Triportheus sits well apart from the deep-bodied Serrasalmidae (piranhas, pacus, silver dollars): it is a slender, laterally compressed fish adapted to feed at the surface rather than to graze, scavenge or hunt in mid-water. As with many recently split or narrowly described Neotropical characins, T. venezuelensis is not a fish with an established aquarium-trade identity, and any specimens reaching hobbyists are more likely to be traded loosely as "Triportheus sp." or confused with the wider-ranging T. angulatus.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Triportheus venezuelensis has a slim, laterally compressed, silvery body with a straight dorsal profile and a distinctly keeled belly — a sharp, bony ridge running from the pectoral region back toward the anal fin that gives the genus its "hatchet characin" nickname and its family name (Triportheidae). The mouth is upturned and set high on the head, a clear adaptation for feeding at or just below the surface film, and the pectoral fins are proportionally long, consistent with the burst-swimming, near-surface lifestyle typical of the genus.
FishBase records a maximum size of just 4.5 in standard length for the species, with a maturity size around 6.5 in reported in some accounts — making it a genuinely small, unassuming fish rather than one of the larger characins covered in this family. Colouration follows the typical Triportheus pattern: bright, unmarked silver flanks with little in the way of bold pattern, well suited to a fish that spends its life near the light-scattering surface of open Orinoco tributaries. No sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species.
Habitat
Triportheus venezuelensis is known from the Río Orinoco basin in Venezuela, with its type locality in Barinas state and closely related material collected from the Guárico drainage; as an Orinoco-basin endemic it belongs to the same broad Neotropical lowland river system that also carries the Amazon's greater characin diversity, but confined to the Orinoco side of the Andes-Guiana Shield divide. Beyond the type series and a handful of ichthyological records, detailed habitat descriptions specific to this species are sparse.
Generalising cautiously from its genus and family, Triportheus species typically inhabit open water near the surface of rivers, floodplain channels and lagoons, often in areas with overhanging or flooded riparian vegetation that supplies the fruit, seeds and insects central to their diet. Data on this species' specific temperature and pH preferences were not found in the cache; keepers should treat any figures as generalised from congeners rather than confirmed for T. venezuelensis specifically.
Feeding
Triportheus venezuelensis is a surface-feeding omnivore, and the genus as a whole is well documented as taking fruit, seeds, flowers and leaves that fall onto the water from flooded forest and riparian vegetation, supplemented by aquatic and terrestrial insects trapped in the surface film. FishBase notes the species' upturned mouth and body plan as adaptations specifically for this near-surface foraging strategy, and related Triportheus species are documented as occasional predators of small fish when the opportunity arises, rather than dedicated piscivores.
In the aquarium, a Triportheus species would need to be fed accordingly — floating pellets, flake and small live or frozen foods offered at or near the surface, since a fish built to feed in the top few centimetres of water will rarely forage effectively from the substrate or mid-water. No aquarium-specific feeding data exists for T. venezuelensis itself; the above follows documented genus-level biology.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented specifically for Triportheus venezuelensis. The species was described from preserved museum material rather than studied live, and the cache and available literature contain no observations of pairing, coloration changes or spawning triggers for this fish. Congeneric hatchet characins such as T. angulatus are reported in hobby literature as substrate egg-scatterers, but that is a generalisation from a related species, not a confirmed account of this one, and should be read as such.
Breeding
There is no confirmed breeding record for Triportheus venezuelensis in the wild or in captivity. Based on general Triportheus and wider minor-characin biology, the genus is presumed to follow the common characin pattern of egg-scattering over vegetation with no parental care, and hobby accounts of the related T. angulatus describe substrate spawning with dense floating plant cover needed for fry survival — but this has not been documented for T. venezuelensis itself, and the species has essentially no aquarium-trade or captive-breeding history to draw on. Data is sparse; this account does not assign a confirmed breeding mode to this species beyond what is known for its genus.

Triportheus venezuelensis is not an established aquarium species — it has no meaningful trade history, and any fish reaching hobbyists would almost certainly arrive as incidental bycatch from Orinoco-basin collection rather than as a deliberately targeted import. What follows is drawn from the better-known congener T. angulatus and from the genus's documented biology, offered as a guide rather than a confirmed care sheet for this species.
Hatchet characins of this genus are fast, nervous surface shoalers that need a long, well-covered aquarium with plenty of open swimming space near the top of the water column; a tight-fitting lid is essential, since Triportheus are noted jumpers when startled. They need well-oxygenated water and are sensitive to sudden pressure changes and rough handling. Given the modest 4.5 in adult size of T. venezuelensis, a shoal would suit a mid-sized tank by the standards of this family — nothing close to the tankage a pacu or wolf fish demands — but the fish should still be kept in a proper group rather than alone, consistent with genus-typical shoaling behaviour. There are no legal restrictions on this species; it is simply obscure rather than regulated.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Triportheus venezuelensis as Least Concern, an assessment dated 6 December 2020. This reflects a fish with no known major threats reported within its Orinoco-basin range, though as a narrowly distributed, recently described species it has not been the subject of extensive population monitoring, and the Least Concern rating should be read as an absence of documented decline rather than evidence of active study. There is no indication of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species, since it is not established in the trade; the main long-term watch items for Orinoco-basin fishes generally are the pressures common to Neotropical lowland rivers — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change — though none of these are specifically documented as affecting T. venezuelensis.
