Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus minutus was formally described by Suzanne Fisch-Muller, Rosana Mazzoni, and Claude Weber in 2001 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 12, number 4, page 298), based on type specimens collected from the Córrego Batéias, a left-bank tributary of the upper Rio Tocantins at 13°49'S, 48°20'W near the town of Minaçu, Goiás, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase treat Ancistrus minutus as a valid species.
The genus Ancistrus is among the most species-rich in Loricariidae and belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae. Bristlenose catfishes — as Ancistrus are widely known — are distinguished from most other loricariids by the branched, fleshy tentacles that develop on the snout and rostral margin of mature males; females may develop shorter, less elaborate tentacles. No L-number has been assigned to A. minutus, and the species is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade.
The species epithet minutus (Latin: small) is a direct reference to the exceptionally small adult size, the smallest recorded in its genus at the time of description.
Morphology
Ancistrus minutus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in (2 in SL), making it the smallest confirmed Ancistrus species. The body is wide and very strongly depressed — notably so relative to its length — with a short dorsal fin (3.9–4.6 times in SL) and a short interdorsal distance (5.5–6 times in SL). The vertebral count is 28–29. Seven to eight dermal plates line the dorsal-fin base. Ground colour is brownish, overlaid with numerous small whitish spots on the dorsal surface and fins; the lips and belly are yellowish and largely or entirely unpigmented.
The area of the supraoccipital plate is often depressed or slightly granular in texture — a noted feature of the original description. The wide mouth and fleshy oral disc are consistent with Ancistrus feeding biology.
Sexual dimorphism follows the Ancistrus pattern: breeding males develop branched, fleshy tentacles (odontodes modified into soft appendages) on the snout and along the rostral margin. Females may also develop tentacles, but these are typically shorter and less branched. As in other Ancistrus, mature females can be distinguished by a broader body profile when gravid and by papilla morphology.
Habitat
Ancistrus minutus is endemic to the upper Rio Tocantins drainage in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Known localities include the Córrego Batéias (the type locality), Ribeirão Acaba Saco, Córrego Acaba Vida, and Rio Traíras — all small tributaries within the Serra da Mesa region. The area of occupancy is estimated by the IUCN at approximately 193 mi².
This region lies within the cerrado biome — Brazil's vast interior savanna — at the headwaters of the Tocantins. The streams the species inhabits are characteristic cerrado watercourses: typically clear to slightly tea-coloured, soft-watered, and with seasonal variation in flow driven by the pronounced wet and dry seasons of the interior plateau. No published quantitative water-parameter data (temperature, pH, conductivity) are available for the specific sites occupied by A. minutus.
The species is also noted as a facultative or obligate air-breather, consistent with survival in small, seasonally low-flow streams that may be intermittently oxygen-depleted.
Feeding
Ancistrus minutus is a detritivore and herbivore — a diet confirmed by gut-content analysis (Mazzoni et al., 2010). In the wild the species ingests algae, detritus, and fine organic material scraped and rasped from submerged surfaces, consistent with the broad oral disc and Ancistrus feeding anatomy.
In aquaria, Ancistrus are reliably maintained on a diet of algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, peas). Small quantities of meaty food are acceptable as supplement. A. minutus's small size (2 in SL) means it will use proportionally smaller food items than the commonly kept Ancistrus cirrhosus or A. dolichopterus.
Mating
No published study of mating behaviour specific to Ancistrus minutus has been located. By inference from Ancistrus biology, males establish and defend cave or crevice territories, displaying their tentacle development to potential mates and rivals. The branched rostral tentacles of mature males are a key secondary sexual character; females inspect males at cave entrances before entering to spawn. Males may be aggressive toward rival males in confined spaces.
No captive breeding reports are on record for this species, and it has not been established in the hobby.
Breeding
Ancistrus minutus is presumed to be a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, following the strongly conserved pattern of the genus: the male selects a confined cavity, adhesive eggs are deposited on the cavity walls, and the male fans and guards the clutch until fry are free-swimming. No captive breeding record has been published or reported to PlanetCatfish for this species.
Clutch size, incubation period, and fry development data are not available in the sources consulted.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus minutus is extremely rare in captivity — no registered keepers or care reports are on record with PlanetCatfish, and the species does not appear in the ornamental trade. Its absence from the hobby is consistent with its restricted range, Endangered status, and the fact that its type locality is now inundated.
As the smallest known Ancistrus, A. minutus would in principle be among the most manageable bristlenose plecos for small aquaria, requiring significantly less space than the commonly kept species. A well-planted or well-furnished aquarium with smooth cobble or slate surfaces and some driftwood would suit its foraging biology. Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the cerrado drainage origin.
Given the species' conservation status, collection from the wild for the ornamental trade would be inappropriate. Should captive populations ever be established from legally obtained specimens, their maintenance and captive breeding would carry genuine conservation value.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus minutus as Endangered (EN) in November 2018 under criterion B2ab(i,ii,iii), citing a restricted area of occupancy (approximately 193 mi²) with continuing decline in extent, area, and habitat quality. The assessment was conducted by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), and the population trend is recorded as decreasing.
The principal threat is the Serra da Mesa hydroelectric dam (UHE Serra da Mesa) on the upper Rio Tocantins. Dam impoundment, completed in the late 1990s, inundated the type locality — Córrego Batéias — along with most of the small streams that formed the species' original range. The remaining known sites (Ribeirão Acaba Saco, Córrego Acaba Vida, Rio Traíras) lie within or adjacent to the reservoir's catchment and are subject to ongoing degradation from urbanisation, agriculture, and mining activities in the surrounding cerrado.
No populations of A. minutus are known from formally protected areas. The species is included in Brazil's National Action Plan for threatened cerrado and pantanal ichthyofauna. The combination of a naturally small range, catastrophic inundation of the type locality, continuing habitat loss, and absence from protected areas makes A. minutus one of the more acutely at-risk loricariids in Brazil's cerrado region.
