Described in 2021 from four small streams within the Cafuringa Environmental Protection Area near Brasília, this compact suckermouth catfish is endemic to the Cerrado uplands of central Brazil — a biodiversity hotspot whose gallery forests and rocky headwater streams are under severe pressure from agricultural conversion.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus cafuringa was described by Soares, Aquino, Bagley, Langeani and Colli in 2021, published in the Journal of Fish Biology. It was one of two new Hypostomus species from the Distrito Federal region of central Brazil introduced in the same paper, the other being H. crulsi. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus cafuringa Soares et al. 2021 as a valid species.

The type locality is ribeirão Contagem near a bridge, a tributary of rio Maranhão in the upper Tocantins River basin, Fercal, Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brazil (approximately 15°35'S, 47°53'W, elevation around 2789 ft). The species is known from four streams in the same drainage cluster: ribeirão Cafuringa, ribeirão Contagem, ribeirão do Buraco, and ribeirão Engenho Velho. All flow into ribeirão da Palma, then rio Maranhão, and ultimately the rio Tocantins.

H. cafuringa is distinguished from close relatives by a combination of characters: dark spots on a light background, absence of plates on the abdomen, a comparatively deeper caudal peduncle, and shorter first rays of both the pectoral and dorsal fins relative to congeners from the same region.

Morphology

The holotype measures approximately 3.5 in standard length, with total length estimated at around 4.5 in, placing H. cafuringa among the smaller species within the diverse genus Hypostomus. The body bears the armoured plate covering typical of Loricariidae — overlapping keeled scutes across the head and flanks. The abdomen notably lacks plates, a diagnostic character noted in the original description.

Coloration is described as dark spots on a pale background — a pattern shared with H. crulsi but distinguishable from it by the proportional characters noted above. Fin formula includes: anal i/4; caudal 7+7; adipose fin present; dorsal profile slightly concave. Pectoral and pelvic fins each bear I/6 rays.

Sexual dimorphism is present: males have proportionally longer fins than females, consistent with the pattern seen across many Hypostomus species.

Habitat

Hypostomus cafuringa is known from four streams in the upper Tocantins basin within the Cafuringa Environmental Protection Area, a protected unit of the Cerrado biome in Distrito Federal, Brazil. These headwater streams flow at elevations between roughly 783 and 2943 ft above sea level.

Stream dimensions recorded during sampling were modest: channel widths of 13–23 ft and depths of 1–3 ft. Flow was described as normal to strong, and substrate consisted of gravel and rocks — the kind of rocky, fast-flowing headwater environment characteristic of Cerrado gallery streams. The Cerrado is a seasonally dry tropical savanna, and its streams experience pronounced wet and dry seasons, with associated fluctuations in flow volume, temperature, and water chemistry.

No water-chemistry measurements (temperature, pH, hardness) were reported from the collection sites in the available data.

Feeding

No feeding observations for H. cafuringa in the wild or captivity are documented. As a member of Hypostomus in a rocky, fast-flowing headwater stream environment, it most likely forages in the manner typical of the genus — scraping aufwuchs, algae, periphyton, and associated fine detritus from submerged rock and gravel surfaces using its specialised sucker mouth and tooth battery.

The rocky substrate and moderate-to-strong currents of its native streams suggest a diet dominated by epilithic biofilm, possibly supplemented with fine organic material transported downstream. No species-specific dietary data are available.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for H. cafuringa. The presence of sexual dimorphism — males with longer fins — is confirmed from the original description, suggesting that fin displays or elaborated secondary sexual characters may play a role in courtship or male competition, as observed in other Hypostomus species.

Beyond this inference, mating details are unknown.

Breeding

No breeding data exist for H. cafuringa in the wild or in captivity. The species has not been recorded in the aquarium trade and no captive spawning reports are known. General Hypostomus biology suggests cave or crevice spawning with some form of parental care, but this cannot be confirmed for this species specifically.

Hypostomus cafuringa is not established in the aquarium trade and no husbandry information is available. The species is endemic to a small number of protected headwater streams in Distrito Federal, Brazil, and has not been reported from ornamental fish collections.

Given its small adult size (holotype approximately 3.5 in SL, total length estimated around 4.5 in) and rocky headwater stream origin, a hypothetical captive setup would require well-oxygenated, flowing water and a rocky substrate with ample crevices. Whether captive conditions could sustain it long-term remains untested.

Conservation

Hypostomus cafuringa has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List as of the time of writing. However, the conservation situation for this species warrants attention: it is endemic to four small streams within a single drainage in the Distrito Federal, Brazil, and was flagged in its original description as being of conservation concern due to ongoing habitat conversion from agricultural expansion in the Cerrado.

The Cerrado biome is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots and one of its most threatened — the majority of its original cover has been converted to agriculture and pasture over recent decades. The gallery forests fringing the streams where H. cafuringa lives are particularly vulnerable: they provide shade, organic input, root structure, and streambank stability, and their removal typically causes sedimentation, elevated water temperatures, and flow-regime alteration — all detrimental to a substrate-dwelling rocky-stream specialist.

The Cafuringa Environmental Protection Area provides some legal protection for the type streams, but enforcement levels and effectiveness in the face of regional agricultural pressure are not known from available sources.
