A little-studied bristlenose catfish from the Floresta Nacional de Carajás in the state of Pará, Ancistrus karajas inhabits the rio Parauapebas drainage of the Tocantins basin — a highly localised distribution within one of the Amazon's largest iron-ore mining frontiers.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus karajas was described by de Oliveira, Rapp Py-Daniel, Zawadzki and Zuanon in 2016, in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters volume 27, number 1, pages 67–80 — the same paper that introduced the closely related A. krenakarore from a different drainage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus karajas as a valid species.

The species name honours the Karajás (Carajás) indigenous people, who historically inhabited the banks of the rio Araguaia and the region of Serra dos Carajás in the Tocantins basin — the same geographic area in which the type specimens were found. The choice of name connects the fish to the deep human and cultural history of the landscape it inhabits.

No provisional L-number or trade code has been assigned to this species. It was described from a restricted locality within a protected forest and does not appear to have entered the ornamental fish trade as of available records.

Morphology

Detailed morphometric data for Ancistrus karajas are sparse in currently available sources. The species shares the general Ancistrus body plan: a depressed, somewhat flattened body covered in keeled bony scutes, a ventrally positioned suctorial mouth bearing bicuspid teeth, and a typical loricariid armour.

Sexual dimorphism in this species is expected to follow the well-established Ancistrus pattern. In mature males, fleshy, branched tentacles develop on the snout and along its margin — the diagnostic 'bristles' of the bristlenose genus. Females typically bear shorter, unbranched marginal snout bristles at most. Specific size data for A. karajas have not been reported in available literature; adult dimensions remain unconfirmed.

Habitat

The type locality of Ancistrus karajas is Igarapé Alemão, a stream within the rio Parauapebas drainage, Floresta Nacional de Carajás, municipality of Parauapebas, Pará, Brazil (approximately 6°00'13"S, 50°34'34"W). The rio Parauapebas is a tributary of the rio Tocantins basin.

The Floresta Nacional de Carajás is a federally protected forest reserve in the Carajás mineral province of eastern Pará, an area of extraordinary iron-ore and mineral wealth overlying the ancient Precambrian shield. The streams of this reserve drain across ferruginous laterite and crystalline rock and are typically clear, low in dissolved solids, and acidic to weakly acidic in character — conditions typical of Amazonian shield streams.

Specific water chemistry measurements from the type locality are not available in current sources. The microhabitat preferences of A. karajas within these streams have not been characterised in literature to date.

Feeding

No dietary data specific to Ancistrus karajas are available in the literature. As an Ancistrus, the species is assumed to be primarily an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer, rasping algae, periphyton, diatoms, and associated organic matter from rocky and woody substrate surfaces using its ventrally placed bicuspid dentition.

In an aquarium setting, members of the genus are typically maintained on high-quality sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based diets, supplemented with blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber, and sweet potato. Driftwood in the tank provides both shelter and an additional rasping surface.

Mating

No mating observations for Ancistrus karajas are documented in available sources. As with the genus broadly, males are expected to establish and defend cave or crevice territories, using their elaborate branched snout tentacles in male-to-male assessment and competition. Females are attracted to or coaxed into the male's defended spawning cavity.

Data on courtship behaviour, seasonality of reproduction, or environmental triggers for breeding in this species are not available.

Breeding

No breeding records for Ancistrus karajas exist in available literature. The species is expected to be a cave spawner with paternal brood care, consistent with the well-documented Ancistrus reproductive mode.

In the general Ancistrus pattern, the male fans and guards adhesive eggs deposited on the interior surfaces of a spawning cavity, removing infertile eggs and maintaining water circulation until the fry hatch and become free-swimming. Given the extremely limited collection record and absence of the species from the ornamental trade, captive breeding of A. karajas has not been reported.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus karajas is not known in the aquarium hobby and has not been recorded from the ornamental fish trade. Its restricted distribution within a federally protected forest reserve (Floresta Nacional de Carajás) means that commercial collection would require specific scientific or governmental permits.

Were specimens to become available, care requirements consistent with a small Tocantins-basin Ancistrus would be appropriate: soft, slightly acidic water; rocky hiding places and driftwood; a sinking algae-based diet; and clean, well-filtered conditions. Specific keeping data for this species cannot be provided from current sources.

Conservation

Ancistrus karajas has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species was described in 2016 and, as of available records, has not yet been evaluated.

The type locality lies within the Floresta Nacional de Carajás, a protected reserve, which provides some degree of habitat security. However, the broader Carajás region is one of the most intensively mined landscapes in Brazil: large-scale iron-ore extraction and associated infrastructure, including roads, railways, dams, and deforestation, affect watersheds across the region. Streams draining the ferruginous plateau of Serra dos Carajás can be highly susceptible to sedimentation and water-quality changes arising from mining operations in adjacent areas.

The apparent narrow distribution of A. karajas — known only from a single stream system within the rio Parauapebas drainage — makes it potentially vulnerable to localised habitat degradation, even within a legally protected area. A formal IUCN assessment would require additional survey data to establish population size and range.
