Described from the upper Tocantins drainage of Goiás, Brazil, Hypostomus ericae is a large loricariid species whose range overlaps almost entirely with one of the most heavily dammed river systems in South America. Named in honour of the ichthyologist who collected the type specimens, it remains virtually unknown in the aquarium trade — a scientifically documented species whose conservation context is shaped as much by hydroelectric infrastructure as by any biological vulnerability.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus ericae was formally described by Hollanda Carvalho and Weber in a paper published in volume 111 (number 4) of the Revue Suisse de Zoologie, dated 2005 but pertaining to the 2004 publication year, at page 958, figures 3–6. No synonyms are recognised; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records this as the valid name with no prior or alternative combinations.

The species has not been assigned an L- or LDA-number in the ornamental trade, consistent with its near-absence from the hobby. It belongs to the subfamily Hypostominae, genus Hypostomus — one of the most species-rich genera in Loricariidae, with taxonomic work ongoing across the clade.

The species epithet honours Erica Pellegrini Caramaschi, who collected the type specimens from the Tocantins drainage. The type locality is precisely recorded as Porto Alfredinho, Rio Tocantins, Tocantins River basin, Goiás State, Brazil (14°02'22.1"S, 48°31'28.6"W).

Morphology

Size data for Hypostomus ericae differ between sources and merit noting. FishBase records a maximum of 11 in standard length (SL) for male/unsexed specimens, and a maximum of 9.5 in SL for females, with a recorded maximum weight of 802.70 g. PlanetCatfish records a smaller figure of 8 in SL (8 in), which may reflect the dimensions of the holotype or paratypes rather than the species' full adult potential. The larger FishBase figure (11 in SL) is used here as the best-supported maximum, but the PlanetCatfish figure suggests that some documented specimens are considerably smaller.

Holotype photographs on file at PlanetCatfish show a fish in lateral, dorsal, and ventral views. Beyond the type series images, detailed colour and morphometric descriptions specific to this species are not available in the accessible sources. As a large Hypostomus, the body is encased in rows of bony scutes with the characteristic sucker-disc mouth positioned ventrally. General Hypostomus morphology includes five lateral scute rows, a large dorsal fin, and robust pectoral spines.

Habitat

Hypostomus ericae is known from the upper Tocantins River system in Goiás State, Brazil — a drainage within the Cerrado biome, the vast tropical savanna that covers central Brazil. FishBase lists the distribution as the upper Tocantins River drainage; PlanetCatfish also records the lower Amazon and Tocantins system as part of its range.

The Tocantins is a major Brazilian river whose upper reaches in Goiás originate in the Brazilian highlands before flowing north to join the Amazon system. The Cerrado rivers that feed the upper Tocantins are characteristically clear, seasonally variable, and flow over rocky and sandy substrates — habitats typical for large Hypostomus in Brazil's interior drainages.

The upper Tocantins drainage has been profoundly altered by major hydroelectric dam construction, including the Serra da Mesa and Cana Brava dams, which have inundated substantial riverine habitat in Goiás. The ecological impact of these impoundments on H. ericae's populations has not been fully assessed.

Feeding

Hypostomus ericae is a benthic grazer and omnivore in the manner typical of large Hypostomus. The suctorial mouth scrapes algae, periphyton, biofilm, and organic detritus from submerged rock and woody substrate surfaces. Large Hypostomus also ingest sediment and associated invertebrates incidentally during feeding activity.

No specific foraging observations have been recorded for this species in either the wild or captivity. In the absence of species-specific data, the feeding requirements expected in captivity would follow those of comparable large Hypostomus: a varied diet centred on algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber), with occasional protein supplements. Natural algae on aquarium surfaces provides supplementary grazing.

No captive keeping records exist for H. ericae, and the species is not represented in the ornamental trade.

Mating

No courtship observations are available for Hypostomus ericae. The species has no registered keepers on PlanetCatfish and is not documented in the hobby, so captive observations are entirely absent.

Based on the reproductive biology of large Hypostomus species generally, courtship is expected to involve male site-guarding, with mature males defending burrow entrances or crevices against rivals and attracting females during seasonal spawning periods. Seasonal flooding in the Cerrado river systems likely drives reproductive timing, with the onset of the rainy season — and associated drops in water temperature, increase in flow, and changes in dissolved oxygen — acting as spawning triggers.

No sex-specific morphological data are documented for H. ericae beyond what can be inferred from the broader genus.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Hypostomus ericae has been documented. The species has no presence in the aquarium trade, no registered keepers on PlanetCatfish, and no spawning accounts in accessible sources.

The expected breeding mode for a large Hypostomus is cavity or burrow spawning with paternal care: the male guards adhesive eggs within a defended cave, fanning and tending the clutch through incubation. In large Hypostomus species, clutch sizes can number in the hundreds. Incubation period and fry development data specific to H. ericae are entirely unknown.

Wild populations in the upper Tocantins face habitat disruption from dams, making field reproductive studies logistically difficult; this further limits the available biological data.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus ericae is not established in the aquarium hobby. It carries no L-number, has no registered keepers on PlanetCatfish, and is not documented in ornamental trade records. Any aquarium encounter with this species would almost certainly involve wild-caught specimens of uncertain identity — large Hypostomus from Brazilian interior rivers are frequently misidentified or sold under trade names that do not reflect the scientific name.

At a maximum of 11 in SL and a recorded weight approaching 800 g, H. ericae would require a large, heavily filtered aquarium if maintained in captivity. Water parameters reflecting its Cerrado origin — clear, warm tropical freshwater with moderate seasonal variation — would be appropriate. Rocky substrate with cave options and good oxygenation would suit its expected ecology.

Given the species' IUCN Least Concern status and its occurrence in a heavily impacted river system, responsible acquisition of wild specimens would require careful sourcing; captive-bred individuals are not currently available.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus ericae as Least Concern in an assessment dated 7 November 2018. Despite the species' range being confined to the upper Tocantins drainage in Goiás — a region with substantial hydroelectric infrastructure including the Serra da Mesa and Cana Brava dams — it was assessed as Least Concern based on apparent persistence in remaining riverine habitats. The IUCN 2018 assessment acknowledged the habitat modification without concluding that it had driven the species below the thresholds for a threatened category.

The upper Tocantins has experienced significant hydrological alteration: large reservoirs have inundated sections of its riverine habitat, changing flow regimes, water temperature patterns, and sediment dynamics in ways that can affect benthic loricariids. The long-term population consequences of these changes for H. ericae remain inadequately documented. Future assessments should incorporate updated population survey data from remaining free-flowing sections of the upper Tocantins drainage.
