Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus bolivianus was originally described by Noel Pearson in 1924, in Indiana University Studies (volume 11, number 64, page 21, Plate 4, figures 1–3), from type material collected at the Río Popoi, upper Río Beni, upper Amazon system, Bolivia. It was first placed in the genus Plecostomus — the historical catch-all for armoured suckermouth catfishes — under the combination Plecostomus bolivianus. Subsequent systematic revision transferred it to Hypostomus, the valid combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), with FishBase identifier 48886.
The genus Hypostomus (Lacepède, 1803) is the largest and most taxonomically complex genus within the subfamily Hypostominae, family Loricariidae. The five subfamilies of Loricariidae were delimited by Armbruster (2004), whose phylogenetic analysis placed Hypostominae as a well-supported clade. Hypostomus bolivianus represents the Amazonian (upper Amazon–Beni basin) component of Hypostomus diversity, a substantially different biogeographic context from the more southerly species in the genus.
The species epithet bolivianus is a Latinised toponym referring to Bolivia, the country from which all type material originates. No aquarium trade names or L-numbers have been assigned to this species.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 6 in for Hypostomus bolivianus; PlanetCatfish records 6 in SL. At this adult size H. bolivianus is distinctly smaller than most Hypostomus species, placing it at the compact end of the genus size range. The body follows the typical Hypostomus plan: strongly flattened ventrally, with overlapping bony scutes covering the dorsal and lateral surfaces, a broad depressed head, dorsally placed eyes, and a ventrally positioned oral disc equipped with bicuspid teeth suited to algae and periphyton scraping.
Two photographs on PlanetCatfish, including a head close-up, depict the species, but detailed coloration and patterning notes are not available from the sources reviewed. As in other Hypostomus, the belly is pale and unscuted. The compact size of H. bolivianus relative to the 10–15.5 in reached by many congeners likely reflects adaptation to the smaller tributary systems of the upper Beni drainage rather than any unique structural reduction.
Sexual dimorphism is not described for this species. By genus analogy, breeding males are expected to develop interopercular odontodes and odontodes on the pectoral spines; females may be broader-bodied when gravid. Reliable sexing in the absence of breeding condition requires close examination.
Habitat
Hypostomus bolivianus is documented from the Beni River basin — a major left-bank tributary of the Madeira, which is itself a principal southern tributary of the Amazon. The Beni drains the eastern slopes of the Bolivian Andes and the Amazonian lowlands of northern Bolivia, flowing through a mosaic of flooded savanna (Llanos de Mojos), forest, and Andean foothill environments. The type locality, Río Popoi in the upper Beni, places the species in a relatively small tributary of the upper drainage, near the Andean margin.
As a benthopelagic, demersal freshwater species, H. bolivianus inhabits the bottom substrate of rivers — rocky or stony reaches where algal biofilm accumulates on hard surfaces. The species is a facultative air-breather, capable of supplementing gill respiration with atmospheric oxygen intake, an adaptation that confers tolerance of fluctuating dissolved-oxygen conditions during seasonal low-water periods in Amazonian river systems. The IUCN NT assessment notes that the species has a relatively limited distribution within the Beni drainage, increasing its sensitivity to localised habitat changes.

Feeding
Hypostomus bolivianus is a herbivore-detritivore of the benthic scraper guild, consistent with the genus. The ventrally positioned oral disc and bicuspid teeth are adapted for rasping periphyton — algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and associated organic matter — from rock and firm substrates in riverine environments. Incidental ingestion of detritus and invertebrates associated with biofilm communities supplements the diet.

Development of interopercular odontodes signals reproductive condition in males across Hypostomus; this is presumed but not confirmed for H. bolivianus.
The seasonal flooding dynamics of the Beni basin, including pronounced wet and dry seasons, likely drive reproductive timing in wild populations, but no field data are available for this species specifically.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Hypostomus bolivianus have been published. By analogy with the genus, it is presumed to be a cave spawner with paternal brood care — the male guards adhesive eggs deposited on the interior of a defended cavity, fans them for oxygenation, and guards early fry until they disperse. Clutch size and incubation duration are not established for this species.
The small adult size of H. bolivianus (up to approximately 6 in TL) means that aquarium breeding attempts could in principle be undertaken in a more modest tank than most Hypostomus require, and it would represent a more practical species for dedicated breeding work. No practical guidance, however, is available beyond genus-level extrapolation.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus bolivianus is effectively unknown in the aquarium trade. Its small adult size — approximately 6 in TL — would make it one of the more manageable Hypostomus species for home aquaria, requiring a tank of perhaps 40–55 US gal for a single adult rather than the 300+ litres demanded by most large congeners. The species would be expected to behave as a typical benthic Hypostomus: peaceful toward unrelated species, intolerant of conspecifics or other bottom-dwelling plecos in confined spaces.
Water conditions appropriate for the upper Beni basin — likely warm tropical temperatures and soft to moderate hardness, although no specific data are published — should be maintained, along with efficient filtration and good flow. A diet of algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and sinking pellets covers the nutritional requirements of a scraper-guild species such as this. Rocky hardscape and cave structures would be appropriate decor elements.
The IUCN Near Threatened assessment means that any future commercial collection of H. bolivianus for the aquarium trade should be conducted with care for sustainability. Tank-raised specimens, if ever produced, would be preferable to wild-caught imports from a conservation standpoint.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus bolivianus as Near Threatened in April 2014 — one of the less common IUCN outcomes for a Hypostomus species, most of which are assessed as Least Concern. The Near Threatened designation indicates that the species approaches but does not yet meet the quantitative thresholds for Vulnerable status under any IUCN criterion. The primary conservation concern is the species' restricted distribution: it is known only from the Beni River drainage of northern Bolivia, and possibly adjacent areas of Peru in upper Beni tributaries, a relatively limited geographic range compared with wide-ranging Hypostomus congeners.
The Beni basin is subject to significant and accelerating habitat degradation: deforestation in the Bolivian Amazon lowlands and Andean foothills contributes to increased sedimentation and altered hydrology in river systems; agricultural expansion — particularly for cattle ranching and soy cultivation — continues to reduce forest cover in this region. These pressures can degrade the rocky-riffle and benthic habitats on which scraper-guild loricariids depend. The 2014 assessment noted sparse data for this species, meaning that the true extent of population change may not yet be captured. An updated assessment post-2014 would be valuable to determine whether conditions have worsened.
