Hypostomus laplatae is a robust, spot-patterned suckermouth catfish native to the Río de la Plata basin, including the lower Río Uruguay, lower Río Paraná, and their coastal tributaries in Argentina, Uruguay, and southernmost Brazil. It is one of the few Hypostomus species whose range extends into the cooler, temperate reaches of southern South America, tolerating water temperatures that drop to the low teens in winter. The species is a common sight to South American riverine biologists but remains scarce in the international aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus laplatae was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907 based on material from the Río de la Plata region. Eigenmann's original placement followed the broad Plecostomus concept used at the time; the species was subsequently transferred to Hypostomus as that genus was progressively re-delimited to encompass the majority of the traditional 'plecostomus' complex in the Neotropics. The specific epithet laplatae is a Latinised genitive of La Plata, directly referencing the estuary and drainage basin from which the type material was collected. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer/CAS) recognises H. laplatae as a valid species, distinct from close relatives such as H. commersoni and H. robinii. Several earlier works confused the species with H. commersoni, and older Brazilian and Argentine fish checklists occasionally list it under variant spellings or as a synonym; modern revisions treat it as valid. Its precise phylogenetic placement within Hypostomus — whether belonging to the commersoni species group or a separate clade — awaits thorough molecular analysis of southern species.

Morphology

Hypostomus laplatae is a large loricariid, with maximum total length reported around 15.5 in, though most adults measured in collections fall in the 10–14 in range. The body profile is broad and strongly depressed, with a rounded snout and a large inferior sucker mouth. Dorsal colouration is medium to dark brown, ornamented with numerous dark, rounded spots that cover the head, trunk, and dorsal fin; spot density and size vary among individuals. The ventral surface is pale yellowish-white. The dorsal fin is moderately tall with one unbranched and 7 branched rays. The caudal fin is emarginate to shallowly forked, with lobes of approximately equal length. Odontode development on the head and pectoral spines is moderate; large males may develop slightly more pronounced cheek odontodes, but pronounced interopercular bristles as seen in Ancistrus are absent. The skin between scutes bears small, non-hypertrophied odontodes over most of the body surface.

Habitat

Hypostomus laplatae occupies the lower reaches of the Río Uruguay, lower Río Paraná (including the Paraná delta), the coastal drainages of Buenos Aires Province and Uruguay, and the riparian tributaries draining into the Río de la Plata estuary. This is among the most temperate ranges of any Hypostomus species, extending to approximately 35° S latitude. Habitats include large lowland rivers with moderate to strong current over sandy and rocky substrates, as well as slower backwaters with submerged wood and macrophyte beds. Water temperatures drop to 54–59 °F (54–59 °F) during the austral winter in Buenos Aires and Uruguay and can reach 79–82 °F (79–82 °F) in summer. pH is generally circumneutral to slightly alkaline (7.0–7.8), and water hardness is moderate. The species is benthic and largely nocturnal, sheltering under large rocks, submerged logs, or in bank crevices during daylight hours.

Feeding

Hypostomus laplatae is a grazing omnivore in the manner typical of the genus. The subterminal mouth and bicuspid, spatulate teeth are well adapted for scraping epilithic algae and biofilm from hard substrates including rock, wood, and compacted clay banks. Gut content analyses of southern Hypostomus species report algae (especially filamentous and epilithic forms), diatoms, detritus, plant fragments, and small invertebrates. In the Río de la Plata system, where primary productivity is high during the warm season, abundant periphyton growth supports large loricariid populations. During winter, when algal growth diminishes in cooler water, the species likely shifts toward greater reliance on detritus and submerged plant material. Consumption of woody material appears incidental rather than specialised. In captivity the species adapts well to sinking algae wafers, vegetable matter (blanched cucumber, courgette, peas), and high-quality sinking pellets.

Mating

Spawning in Hypostomus laplatae has not been studied in detail, but general reproductive patterns can be inferred from its congeners in the Río de la Plata basin. Large Hypostomus in the region typically breed during the austral spring and early summer (September–December), coinciding with rising water temperatures and the seasonal flood pulse. Males excavate or occupy burrows in clay riverbanks, beneath boulder overhangs, or under submerged root systems. Territorial competition among males for nest sites is likely intense given the limited suitable cavities in some habitats. Male Hypostomus are widely documented as the parental sex: after spawning, the male remains in or near the cavity, guarding and aerating the eggs. The temperate seasonality of the La Plata basin may impose a more constrained breeding window than is typical for tropical Hypostomus, but this has not been quantified for this species specifically.

Breeding

Confirmed captive breeding records for Hypostomus laplatae are absent from the available hobbyist and scientific literature. Given its large adult size — potentially exceeding 12 in — successful captive reproduction would require a very large aquarium or a dedicated breeding pond. By analogy with H. commersoni and other large Río de la Plata Hypostomus, the species is a cavity brooder with paternal care: the male guards the egg mass in an enclosed nest, ventilates the eggs with fin fanning, and protects juveniles in the early post-hatching period. Clutch sizes in large Hypostomus can number in the hundreds. Water temperature cycling — providing a cool-water winter period followed by gradual warming in spring — might be necessary to trigger spawning in captivity, analogous to conditioning strategies used for other temperate South American fishes. No specific aquarium breeding protocol has been documented for this species.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus laplatae is rarely encountered in the international aquarium trade and is essentially unknown in the hobby outside Argentina and Uruguay. Its large eventual size (potentially 12–14 in or more in captivity) and temperate temperature preference make it a demanding and space-intensive species. A minimum aquarium volume of 130 US gal (approximately 130 US gallons) would be needed for a single adult. One of the species' most valuable traits for temperate aquarists is its cold-tolerance: it can be maintained unheated in temperate-climate fishrooms and garden ponds during warmer months, and survives temperatures down to at least 55–59 °F (55–59 °F). Optimal temperatures for long-term maintenance are 64–75 °F (64–75 °F). Neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard water is preferred. Furnish the tank with large driftwood pieces for grazing and shelter, smooth or fine-gravel substrate, and robust cave structures. Diet as for other large Hypostomus: algae wafers, vegetable matter, occasional protein. The species is generally peaceful with dissimilar tankmates but may compete aggressively with other large loricariids over territory.

Conservation

Hypostomus laplatae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026 (status: Not Evaluated). However, the species inhabits one of the most heavily impacted river systems in South America. The lower Río Paraná and Río Uruguay have been substantially modified by a cascade of large hydroelectric dams — including the Yacyretá, Salto Grande, and Itaipú complexes — which alter thermal regimes, flood pulses, sediment loads, and fish passage corridors. The Paraná delta and Río de la Plata coastal zone experience high levels of industrial and agricultural pollution, including soy agrichemical runoff and urban effluent from Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Sedimentation from deforestation in the upper basins has smothered rocky substrates that loricariids depend on for spawning. Despite these pressures, H. laplatae appears to persist across a broad range and is not considered immediately threatened; it is caught in artisanal fisheries and recorded regularly in survey collections. Population trend data are lacking.
