Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus meleagris was described by Marini, Nichols, and La Monte in 1933 in American Museum Novitates (number 618, page 4), with the original combination Plecostomus meleagris. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Hypostomus meleagris as the valid combination, with Plecostomus meleagris as a junior synonym. The species belongs to the large and taxonomically challenging genus Hypostomus, subfamily Hypostominae, family Loricariidae.
A critical caveat applies to this species: the IUCN Red List assessment (2018, published 2021) explicitly notes that the validity of H. meleagris is uncertain and that the species is known only from its type series. Oyakawa and Menezes (2011) reported no verified material from Argentina or Paraguay despite earlier citations; the species' presence outside southeastern Brazil is unconfirmed. Weber's 2003 Checklist of Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America and Langeani et al. (2007, Biota Neotropica 7(3):181–197) are among the few substantive references available. Until a modern revision of the Paraná Hypostomus fauna provides fresh material and molecular data, the species' validity and distribution remain open questions.
Morphology
Published sources list a maximum size of 12 in standard length (SL), making H. meleagris a large species within Hypostomus. However, this figure derives from the type series and from literature summaries rather than from extensive morphometric study of broad collections; it should be interpreted accordingly.
The epithet meleagris is Latin for 'guinea fowl' and refers to the spotted pattern — a pale ground colour overlaid with numerous dark round spots — that evidently characterised the type specimens. This pattern type recurs across multiple Hypostomus lineages and is not in itself diagnostic at the species level. Beyond the spotted pigmentation and size, detailed morphological data (scute counts, tooth morphology, head proportions) for H. meleagris are not readily available in the accessible literature, a direct consequence of the species being known only from a small type series that has received limited subsequent study.
Habitat
FishBase places Hypostomus meleagris in the upper and middle Paraná River basin of southeastern Brazil, with the IUCN assessment restricting the confirmed range to the states of Goiás and Minas Gerais. The Paraná is a large subtropical river system draining the Brazilian highlands before flowing south through Argentina to the Río de la Plata; the Brazilian upper and middle sections include clear-water tributaries with rocky and sandy substrates as well as larger, more turbid channel environments.
The habitat description from FishBase is benthopelagic freshwater in a subtropical setting. No temperature, pH, or hardness data specific to the collection localities of H. meleagris have been published. PlanetCatfish lists no environmental parameters for this species. The IUCN assessment notes that the species inhabits permanent rivers and streams, which is the standard Hypostomus habitat description and carries limited additional ecological content.
Feeding
No diet or gut-content studies have been carried out specifically for Hypostomus meleagris. The general Hypostomus feeding mode — scraping epilithic algae, periphyton, and biofilm from hard substrates using the ventrally-placed, fine-toothed mouth — is the most likely dietary strategy, given the morphology implied by the generic placement and the benthopelagic lifestyle.
In the absence of species-specific data, care in an aquarium context would sensibly follow the broad Hypostomus template: algae and periphyton as the dietary core, supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables. Heavy animal protein is generally inappropriate for sustained feeding of large Hypostomus.
Mating
No courtship or mating observations exist in the published or hobbyist literature for Hypostomus meleagris. The species is not reported as having been maintained or bred in aquaria. Within Hypostomus, where breeding biology has been documented, males typically defend cavities in riverbanks or beneath boulders and court females into those sites; intraspecific male competition can involve physical confrontation and odontode use.
Given the uncertain taxonomic status and the absence of any captive material, nothing specific can be stated about the mating behaviour of this species beyond what general Hypostomus biology suggests.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Hypostomus meleagris are known. The species is not reported in the ornamental trade and has not been the subject of aquarium observation. The IUCN assessment notes that no population data are available and identifies taxonomy, distribution, population trends, and basic biology as research priorities.
The reproductive strategy, if consistent with Hypostomus in general, would be expected to involve cave-spawning with paternal egg guarding and adhesive clutches. These remain inferences from the generic placement rather than documented facts for this taxon.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus meleagris is not an established aquarium species and has not been reliably imported or bred in captivity. Its uncertain taxonomic status means that fish sold or maintained under this name in the hobby have likely not been confirmed against type material, and misidentification is a real possibility among the many spotted Hypostomus in the Paraná drainage.
For any keeper holding confirmed material, the standard approach for a large subtropical Hypostomus would apply: a very large aquarium (upwards of 105 US gal for an adult at 12 in SL), strong filtration, rocky substrate and cave structures, and a diet centred on algae and vegetation. Subtropical temperature (likely 68–79 °F, based on the Paraná region) rather than the higher tropical range would be appropriate, though precise data are absent.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus meleagris as Data Deficient (DD) on 7 November 2018 (published 2021). The assessment was conducted by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and reviewed by M.F. Tognelli. The assessors noted that the species' validity is uncertain — a point that is unusual to see flagged explicitly in an IUCN entry — and that the confirmed range is restricted to Goiás and Minas Gerais, Brazil, with no verified records from Argentina or Paraguay despite earlier literature claims.
No conservation actions specific to H. meleagris are in place. The assessment identifies research into taxonomy, distribution, population trends, and basic biology as the highest priorities before any meaningful threat assessment can be made. The Paraná basin is subject to significant modification through agriculture, hydroelectric development, and urban water extraction, but the relevance of these pressures to a species of uncertain validity and known only from type specimens cannot presently be evaluated.
