A small, boldly patterned suckermouth catfish from the turbid, rocky reaches of the rio Cuiabá, Hypostomus peckoltoides stands out in a large genus for its striking dark transverse bars — the very markings that link its scientific name to the distantly related genus Peckoltia.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus peckoltoides was described by Zawadzki, Weber & Pavanelli in 2010 and published in the Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters series. The species is recognised as valid by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). Its placement within the large, polyphyletic genus Hypostomus reflects historical convention rather than a confirmed monophyletic grouping; ongoing molecular and morphological work continues to resolve lineages within Loricariidae.

In the hobby, the species circulates under the code L390, an assignment made before the formal scientific description — a common route for arresting-looking loricariids that enter the trade as undescribed novelties. The specific epithet peckoltoides is formed from the genus name Peckoltia — itself honouring Gustavo Peckolt, a nineteenth-century German-Brazilian naturalist and pharmacist who collected Brazilian natural history specimens — and the Greek suffix -oides, meaning 'resembling'. The name reflects the visual similarity between H. peckoltoides and members of Peckoltia, both of which bear dark saddle-like body markings.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in SL; hobbyist sources report total lengths in the range of 3–4.5 in, broadly consistent with that figure. The body follows the standard loricariid plan: dorsoventrally flattened, armoured with rows of overlapping bony scutes, and equipped with a ventral suckermouth bearing well-developed tooth rows.

The defining visual characters are the wide, dark transverse bars crossing the dorsal surface of the body and corresponding dark bands on the fins. Superimposed on these are conspicuous dark vermiculations across the abdominal region — a somewhat unusual feature among Hypostomus and one that contributes to the resemblance to Peckoltia species noted in the etymology. In this regard, H. peckoltoides stands apart from many of its congeners, which tend toward spotted or uniformly coloured patterns. Like all Hypostomus, this species is capable of facultative air-breathing, surfacing to gulp atmospheric oxygen when dissolved oxygen in the water column is low.

Habitat

Hypostomus peckoltoides is currently known only from its type locality: the rio Cuiabá in the upper rio Paraguay basin, Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The rio Cuiabá is a large, turbid lowland river with a seasonally fluctuating discharge; its waters carry a high suspended sediment load derived from the adjacent Cerrado and pantanal transitional landscapes.

Field and FishBase data describe the habitat as freshwater, demersal, and tropical. The substrate at collection sites is characterised as rocky with sandy interstices — a typical refuge zone for benthic suckermouth catfishes that require hard surfaces for both feeding and resting. The species has not been reported from adjacent drainages. Whether this restricted distribution reflects a genuinely narrow endemic range or an artefact of sampling effort remains to be established.

Feeding

As a member of Hypostomus, H. peckoltoides is a periphyton and algae grazer — a scraper that uses its oral disc to rasp biofilm, attached algae, and fine organic matter from hard substrates such as rocks and submerged wood. This benthic foraging mode is characteristic of the genus and is reflected in the ventrally positioned, rasping mouth.

In the aquarium, the diet should centre on algae-based foods: spirulina wafers, algae discs, and blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and sweet potato are all appropriate. Supplementary invertebrate foods can be offered occasionally. Continuous access to algae-coated rocks or slate panels and a small piece of driftwood allows natural foraging behaviour and provides trace dietary components the fish would encounter in turbid river environments.

Mating

No specific mating observations for H. peckoltoides have been published. General patterns within Hypostomus — which have been documented for numerous congeners — suggest that males establish and defend territory around suitable spawning sites, typically rock crevices, hollow driftwood, or undercut surfaces in flowing water. Interopercular odontodes are variably developed in Hypostomus males and may function in territorial and mate-attraction contexts, though degree of development differs among species.

Given the turbid, benthic habitat of H. peckoltoides, spawning likely coincides with seasonal water-level changes that are characteristic of the upper Paraguay basin, where the dry-season recession of floodwaters concentrates fish and may trigger reproductive readiness. These inferences are drawn from the biology of the genus broadly and should not be taken as confirmed for this species specifically.

Breeding

No aquarium breeding reports for H. peckoltoides have been confirmed in the published literature or major hobbyist databases as of the time of writing. The species appears to remain uncommon in captive collections despite its L-number designation, and reproduction in captivity has not been documented.

By analogy with other small to mid-sized Hypostomus, a cave-spawning mode with paternal brood care would be expected — the male guarding adhesive eggs deposited on a hard substrate within a defended hollow or crevice and fanning them until hatching. Any aquarist achieving a confirmed spawning of this species would be making a meaningful contribution to knowledge of the clade.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus peckoltoides is a small suckermouth catfish, and its adult size of roughly 4–4.5 in total length places it among the more manageable members of its genus for home aquaria. A tank of 30–40 US gal with a soft substrate, a scattering of smooth rocks, and a piece of driftwood would provide adequate space for a single specimen, allowing it to display its natural foraging behaviour.

Water conditions should reflect the tropical, turbid river of origin: temperatures in the broadly tropical range (75–82 °F) are appropriate; precise water chemistry targets are not established from field data for this species, but neutral to slightly alkaline water consistent with the upper Paraguay basin is a reasonable guide. Efficient filtration is important because suckermouth catfishes produce considerable waste.

The bold banding pattern and L-number status make H. peckoltoides an appealing specimen fish for catfish enthusiasts. It should be kept singly or with non-competing tankmates; other plated catfishes of similar size may compete for caves and resting spots. Hobbyist sources indicate a captive lifespan of 6–8 years under good husbandry, though this figure comes from general experience with the genus rather than confirmed records for this species specifically.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus peckoltoides as Least Concern in November 2018. At the time of assessment, the species was considered to have a sufficiently stable population within its known range in the upper Paraguay basin to avoid a threatened category, and no documented declines were on record.

Nonetheless, the species is currently known only from a single drainage — the rio Cuiabá — and its apparently restricted range warrants some attention. The upper rio Paraguay and its tributaries in Mato Grosso state face ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, sedimentation, and altered hydrology driven by soybean farming and associated land clearance across the Cerrado. Further survey work would help clarify whether H. peckoltoides genuinely has a narrow endemic range or whether its distribution extends to comparable rocky reaches elsewhere in the upper Paraguay system.
