At up to 10.5 in standard length, Loricaria lata is one of the larger whiptail catfishes, a broad-bodied Araguaia endemic assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN — a status that signals incomplete knowledge rather than confirmed safety, in a basin already under mounting agricultural and hydroelectric pressure.

Taxonomy & naming

Loricaria lata was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889, with the original description published in the Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences (series 2, volume 2). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Loricaria lata Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 as the valid combination, with CoF species ID 5243. The species belongs to the genus Loricaria — the type genus of the subfamily Loricariinae and of the family Loricariidae itself — and to the nominal tribe Loricariini.

The genus Loricaria contains slender, dorsoventrally flattened whiptail catfishes distributed broadly across South American river systems. Males of the genus are known to mouth-brood eggs, a reproductive specialisation shared with allied genera such as Loricariichthys. Ferraris (2003), in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, confirmed the distribution of L. lata as the Araguaia River basin, Brazil, and placed maximum standard length at 10.5 in SL.

The Eigenmanns described a number of Loricariidae during their productive late-nineteenth-century survey work on South American ichthyology; L. lata was among the species characterised from material apparently collected from the Araguaia drainage, a large river system in central Brazil that was then poorly documented.

Morphology

Loricaria lata is a large whiptail, reaching 10.5 in standard length — among the larger species in its genus. The specific epithet lata (Latin: broad, wide) is thought to refer to the relatively broad body profile of this species compared with more slender congeners, a distinction visible particularly in the head region and across the pectoral girdle.

Like all loricariins, the body is heavily armoured in overlapping bony scutes arranged in lateral rows, with a naked or lightly scuted ventral surface. The head is broad and flat, and the subterminal mouth bears fine multi-cusped teeth suited to scraping biofilm and soft algae. The caudal fin terminates in filamentous extensions typical of the genus; the lower caudal lobe is typically longer.

Breeding males develop conspicuous interopercular odontodes — hook-like spines on the cheeks — as well as odontodes along the leading edge of the pectoral fins. These structures are used in male–male contests. Females lack well-developed odontodes. No detailed meristic data specific to L. lata are available in the sources consulted here.

Habitat

Loricaria lata is known from the Araguaia River basin in central Brazil. The Araguaia is a major river draining the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, and Pará, joining the Tocantins River before that system discharges into the lower Amazon estuary near Belém. The Araguaia has a pronounced seasonal flood regime, with high-water inundation of adjacent varzea and gallery forests and a distinct dry season during which channels contract and concentrations of fish in residual pools intensify predation and competition.

No specific physico-chemical measurements (temperature, pH, conductivity) for L. lata collection sites appear in the available sources. The Araguaia in its mid-course supports warm (approximately 77–86 °F), often turbid whitewater with moderate nutrient loads derived from cerrado savanna and agricultural land. The species is described as demersal and freshwater; like other loricariin whiptails it is expected to occupy sandy and muddy substrates with abundant submerged wood and leaf litter accumulations.

The Araguaia basin faces significant anthropogenic pressure — see Conservation below — which partly explains the IUCN's Data Deficient assessment: baseline ecological data are insufficient to determine whether populations have been impacted.

Feeding

Loricaria lata is inferred to feed on algal biofilm, periphyton, fine organic detritus, and associated microinvertebrates scraped from submerged surfaces. A trophic level of 2.4 is recorded on FishBase for the genus, consistent with a primary consumer diet dominated by plant material and fine organic matter rather than animal prey.

The ventrally positioned, fine-toothed mouth of loricariin whiptails is morphologically adapted for scraping biofilm from hard substrates — submerged wood, rocks, and consolidated mud — rather than for processing coarse plant material or hard invertebrates. In the aquarium, whiptails of this type respond well to algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, blanched courgette or cucumber, and occasional offerings of fine-grade sinking foods. The species does not appear to be wood-eating (xylophagous) in the manner of Panaqolus or Panaque.

Mating

Specific observations of mating behaviour in L. lata have not been published in the available literature. Based on genus-level biology, males are expected to be territorial, competing for access to brooding positions and females using interopercular and pectoral odontodes in lateral displays and direct contests. Females in breeding condition are likely broader-bodied than males when viewed from above.

In the Araguaia's seasonal flood regime, breeding likely follows the general South American lowland pattern: spawning concentrated in the dry season or as water levels begin to fall, when fish concentrate in receding pools and conditions stimulate reproductive behaviour. Air-breathing capacity, documented for related genera, may allow males to occupy shallow hypoxic microhabitats during brooding.

Breeding

Males of the genus Loricaria are paternal mouth-brooders: after spawning, the male receives or collects the egg mass and broods it in or near the mouth — a behaviour well-documented in several congeners. Whether L. lata exhibits full oral brooding or a modified form of lip-attachment (as in Loricariichthys) is not confirmed in the literature examined here.

No clutch size, incubation period, or fry development data specific to L. lata have been published in sources available. Given that the species is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and carries a Data Deficient IUCN assessment reflecting limited data generally, captive breeding records are absent from the semi-formal or hobby literature. Husbandry inferences must therefore be drawn from the broader Loricariinae pattern.

In the aquarium

Loricaria lata is not a species encountered in the mainstream ornamental trade; it carries no L-number and its Araguaia basin range is not a major source of exported aquarium fish. Should specimens become available — possibly through South American specialist importers — its size (up to 10.5 in SL, with total length somewhat larger) demands a correspondingly spacious aquarium. A tank of at least 71 in in length is appropriate for an adult, furnished with a deep sandy or fine-gravel substrate and abundant submerged wood and leaf litter to replicate the demersal microhabitat.

Water parameters should reflect warm, seasonally variable tropical conditions consistent with central Brazilian rivers: temperature approximately 75–84 °F, pH near neutral, moderate hardness. Water quality must be maintained carefully — loricariin whiptails are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite accumulation, and their bottom-dwelling habit places them in the zone of highest waste concentration.

Males in breeding condition will develop prominent interopercular odontodes and may become territorial toward conspecifics. Tankmates should be peaceful mid-water species; aggressive or fin-nipping fish should be avoided, as the long caudal filaments of whiptails are vulnerable to nipping.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Loricaria lata as Data Deficient on 7 November 2018. A Data Deficient assessment does not imply that a species is secure; it indicates that available information is inadequate to determine threat status. For L. lata, this reflects the combination of a restricted basin distribution and a near-total absence of population surveys, abundance data, or trend information.

The Araguaia basin — the sole known range of this species — is one of Brazil's most heavily impacted major river systems. Agricultural conversion of the cerrado biome has caused severe sedimentation and reduced water quality throughout the basin. The Araguaia is also subject to ongoing hydroelectric development, with dams that alter seasonal flood dynamics and block fish movements. Loss of submerged wood and leaf litter through bank erosion and deforestation directly degrades the microhabitat on which demersal loricariin species depend.

Given the DD status and the known pressures on the Araguaia system, L. lata should be considered a priority for targeted field survey. Population data sufficient to allow a genuine threat assessment are currently lacking.
